Boards, you are a liar. We did hold Saddam accountable for the gassing of the Kurds in Halabja in 1988. First was in 1991 with Desert Storm. The second was in the invasion in 2003 where Bush II finished what dad would not. Had Bush I not got all squirmy in 1991 when we were annihilating the remnants of his army hauling arse out of Kuwait, we could have made him pay for his actions in 1988 right then in February 1991. Schwartzkopf created the perfect battle plan and Bush I pulled the plug on it when we could have eliminated all of Saddam's capabilities militarily and the Iraqi people could have deposed him and been doing their own thing at that point...but noooooooo Bush I saw what we were doing to the forces retreating on the road to Basra and halted it. Sorry, but that's how you fight wars. That's how things are supposed to be done and if you don't fight wars in that manner, you actually let the "dog you have pinned down up to bite you again later"...see Iraq in 2003 before the invasion. How many BILLIONS did we spend on Operation Southern Watch and other missions from 1991 to 2003 letting the dog keep nipping at our heels? Hmmmm....no, DEAD dogs don't nip at anyone's heels. They are buried and forgotten.

2seaoat wrote:What exactly is your problem with that quote?  It seemed reasoned and balanced.   President Obama and Harry Truman were regularly criticized for the lack of foreign policy experience, but history has shown that Truman nailed it and I dare suggest the same will be true about Obama.
Obama is rightly criticized and he keeps giving folks the ammo himself with his actions every day.

Truman was an insecure former artillery/cavalry officer who got called out by one of the greatest American military generals ever who referred to him as "the COWH" in the speech where he (MacArthur) said,"... his allegiance was not to the COWH, but to the Constitution of the United States."

Yes, the Baby Boomers passed the Federal Reserve Act in 1913, the Social Security Act in 1935, the Medicare Act in 1965 and led the way to vast government growth and expansion. The generations before ours are very complicit in growing the government into what has become today's monstrosity. Get a grip!

That being said, the generations that will start tearing it all down will be those just coming of age. The Millenials and those following are not going to willingly pay the debts accumulated since Reagan was president. Not only, they are going to rob Boomers of their Social Security if this is what is needed to reduce government spending. Stay tuned....

Agreed... We will either find a sustainable way... or one will be dictated to us. I'm not necessarily sure if it'll be the next generation... perhaps the dollar... could be the chinese... maybe just our willingness to follow. But we're certainly headed down a path.
