Over the past two weeks, it seems every time I go shopping in Pace I see a battered pickup (different ones) parading back and forth on Highway 90 with the rebel flag affixed to the truck beds. In one case, the white driver, wearing a camo baseball hat and vest, had the rebel flag on one side and the American flag on the other. Explain that to me! One flag represents men who fought and gave their lives to keep slavery, and the other flag represents those who did the same to end it -- and who won. Why fly them both? There's nothing American about people who obviously approve of slavery and hate black people!

Explain it to me ....

Both my maternal and paternal grandparents families fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy.  In all my years with the family, no uncle, cousin, grandparent, has EVER displayed a confederate flag.  Do not get me wrong.  My family had no use for integration or yankees.  However, it was a class thing.  They were solidly middle class with good jobs and were strict Southern Baptist adherents.

I think the pickup trucks, drunkeness, and defiance is a blue collar thing which is as much against the southern power structure and hypocrisy of my family's strict religious beliefs as it is outright hate toward black people.  Yes, that is part of it, but I think it is more an economic FU as much to blacks as the southern traditional power structure where economic exploitation and adhering to the social norm allows some to rebel......literally.   I can remember my grandmother constantly talking about white trash....and shaking her head....woe is me.....woe is me.....those people are animals.......Southern poverty is as much a contributing factor as racism, but the flag is evil.

It must pain your sensibilities that your govt does not yet control every aspect of the other proletariat.

Be patient comrade... your progeny will never be aware of the freedoms you enjoyed.

Would you want to win a tennis tournament where the rules were not consistent and favored one player.  I like a level playing field.

Then a level playing field would be that (no matter how silly I find both) a southerner can be just as dumb as a socialist.

The flag doesn't always symbolize what wordslinger and seaoat are telling us.

An example would be Pensacola the "City of Five Flags".  That is a statement of pride in the fact that our city has been governed by five different nations.
The fact that the Confederacy (and it's flag) has been designated to be one of them has nothing whatever to do with racism,  slavery,  racial prejudice, bigotry or anything of the kind.  It's just a historical fact.
And removing it is just some silly political correctness.

But as I said in an earlier thread,  I have no use for the personality types wordslinger is referring to.
That mentality was best described in the movie "Easy Rider".  And it would be the two yahoos in the pickup who blew away Dennis Hopper.
I've encountered a great many of those in the rural south. Many around here too.

A rebellion which lost and never defeated the Americans on Santa Rosa Sound is not being ruled.   It was four flags and some creative BS.....first as recently as 2000 they were realizing they had the wrong damn flag....same problem as South Carolina flying other state's battle flags.....so Bob you are wrong, and I challenge you to find the date when Pensacola was called the city of five flags.....and will argue it never was.....it was the city of four flags.....check your sources before you start making stuff up........I love this place.......give some folks some rights......and it suddenly it becomes the city of five flags.......

I am absolutely sure it was called the "City of Five Flags". But I don't believe the Confederate flag in question ever flew here after 1980.

I too have seen trucks on Hwy 90 between Pace and Milton with the Dixie flag flying out the back. Sometimes they have a Dixie, a Stars and Stripes and a black and white POW flag.

Today on Hwy 90 I saw a roadside vendor selling special Dixie flags. The one I was able to make out was the rebel flag and in the middle where the two lines of stars crossed was a huge #3 for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s nascar number so symbols are getting hijacked by different groups to represent their view of the world, a statement as to who they are.

Rainbow flags, green peace flags, etc. shows where you're coming from. Unfortunately the Dixie flag comes preassembled with its own historic baggage that cannot be dismissed or explained away. You can't just say "its a Southern thang, you just wouldn't understand".That's not accurate unless you want to include slavery as part of that "thang".

The "Dixie" flag with Dale Earnhart's number in the center, does that mean that NASCAR loves slavery and hates blacks? Or is it just Dale Earnart who does so?

I hate to have to tell you this, tex. But seaoat nailed me this time. I just made that up about the city of five flags and he was smart enough to call me on it.
No it's always been the City of Four Flags like he says.

The theme park is called Five Flags Over Georgia, too. They knew if they named it Six Flags Over Georgia, it would have only been suitable for Klan meetings and the theme park customers would have become slaves.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=city+of+five+flags

And the city of Niles Michigan is the city of four flags...

Thanks to all of you for your comments and answers. What comes through loud and clear is that these guys who parade around with rebel flags waving from their pickups are disgusting, embarrassing, knuckle dragging southern white trash.

It's reassuring for me to realize I'm not alone with that appraisal.

Next, let me as how we should respond to them? Ignore them? Flip them the finger? Shoot and kill them? Spit in the milk of their engines? (the latter line is one I've copied from Hemmingway, see For Whom the Bell Tolls ...)

It would suit me fine if you decide to shoot them the same way they shot Dennis Hopper, wordslinger. If you don't already have a gun, I'll loan you my Judge.

By the way, wordslinger, when you were working in Hollywood, did you ever get to meet Terry Southern? I just discovered that he not only co-wrote Easy Rider, but before that he figured into the Beat Generation and after that he wrote for Saturday Night Live.

It's called Freedom of Expression wordslinger. Are you really threatened by it? Also, the current flag for the US is NOT the one that ws used during the time that the Civil War was fought so it does not represent those who freed the slaves- even though slavery was not the issue until the Emancipaton Proclamation in 1863. Check out your flag history and quit whining.

Seaoat, it's the Ciry of Five Flags .... Ask Dr Rucker who teaches Florida History at UWF. You can sign up for the class and take it this semester.

No Bob, I never met Southern -- but I did enjoy Easy Rider -- and have watched it several times. Jack Nicholson was fantastic!

It is freedom of expression, and they are expressing that they are anti-social assholes looking for a way to offend and/or provoke.

The best response is to ignore them, and deny them the attention they are so desperately seeking.

It's really just a display of the last pathetic shred of white privilege the gap-toothed, no prospect, diminutively endowed losers can muster.

I never said the white cracker assholes who parade their battered pickups up and down Highway 90 didn't have the right to do so. They do, same as you have the right to wear your Swastika tattoo on your forehead. And slavery was indeed the cause of the southern states who seceded, despite the bullshit you southern crackers like to sell as reality. No, I'm not threatened by the likes of you. But the idea that a real school would allow knuckledraggers like you to mislead children does rankle, I admit.

Whatever you do, Sal, don't go into any of those redneck beer joints they hang out in and say that out loud.
Because I value your contributions to the forum and you wouldn't be able to post with two broken arms. lol

Look, it's like this, boys.

Some twisted, demented little prick guns down innocent people in a church, and now because of that we're taking a flag out of The City of Five Flags.
When that city is 500 miles away from the shooting and it's been the fucking City of Five Flags for almost 150 years.

And the same people who want to do this are the ones telling us Trump has a tendency to get carried away.

Bring it on booby. It's clear you can't overcome them with rationale.
