By the way, that's not just Scruggs and Martin. That's also Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Jerry Douglas and the legendary Leon Russell too. And Paul Shaffer aint bad neither.

Love it!

Steve Martin did a show here in Huntsville last year....we didn't go. We should have. The Ryman Auditorium has Bluegrass shows during the summer. Last summer we went to see Vince Gill at the Ryman with a bluegrass band he put together. It was a wonderful show and Gill took a half hour in the middle of the show to do some of his non-bluegrass classics. Marty Stuart.....He's kind of goofy looking in his leather outfit...but the man is highly talented.

What a great group this is in the video! These talented old guys are dying off on us. Sad

But this thread has an alterior motive. It goes from Steve Martin banjo player to Steve Martin magician. Although that's not really where it's going that's just a stopover on the road to the actual theme of the thread which comes later when I will explain what is common to both of the links below...

But back to Steve Martin. Here are two television appearances. One was during the final three weeks of the Johnny Carson version of the Tonight Show. The other Letterman's CBS show.
Take a gander at both and then after you've watched this I will explain what this thread is all about.

The "Flydini" routine...

The Letterman appearance...

Okay here's the deal. That Flydini video is going around in email and it was forwarded to me.
As I watched it I was trying to comprehend how those illusions were done. So I googled in attempt to learn about that but was unable to.

However, what I did discover is that whole Flydini routine (and the similiar effect with the Letterman bit) was created for Steve Martin by probably the best sleight of hand artist who ever lived. His name is Ricky Jay. And when I kept googling I discovered that Ricky Jay is truly a phenomenon. I've already become an obsessed fanboy of this individual.

Here's the video I really wanted you to watch. But I thought it might be best to introduce it to you in exactly the same way I discovered it so that's why the preliminary stuff.

p.s. if you think you recognize his face it may be because he also does character acting jobs in films.

BRILLIANT...he kills me. There's a movie he did with Michael Caine called Dirty Rotten Scoundrels that is hilarious.

My favorite is Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

My favorite scene:

"How would he know where we're going?"
"Yea, how would he know?"

Steve Martin and Bill Murray are both very capable doing straight portrayals. Martin in "Planes" and Murray in Lost in Translation is the evidence of that.
As a rule, humor often derives from a pretty deep sense of pathos, and for those comics, drama comes as easily as comedy.

But my favorite Steve Martin film is a comedy, Bowfinger. That makes me laugh so hard it hurts.

But based on the response to it, I guess Ricky Jay's incredible talent doesn't do it for you folks.
That's okay. I guess we can't all have the same tastes when it comes to entertainment. lol

I like Lost in Translation. I liked it just OK the first time I watched it. But the second time I watched it, I liked it much more. Before we left Japan, hubby and I went to the Tokyo Park Hyatt Hotel bar where the bar scenes in the movie were shot. We sat and had a drink, the most money we've ever paid, or ever will pay again, for a couple of drinks. But it was a fun night.

But remember now, Ricky Jay and Steve Martin are both very much devotees
of what popular entertainment was at an earlier time. Granted it's not where Steve Martin finds his commercial success, but all that classical magic, illusion and conjuring stuff is what got him interested in being an entertainer to begin with.

There was a time before films and television when the Houdinis and magicians and the illusionists and the sideshow performers reigned supreme. It's now starting to get lost to the ages though.

........................................................................

Really Bob...? Are you feeling rejected....LOL.

I saw Steve on one of his first appearances on Carson. He was doing the arrow head thing, carrying his banjo, and my God was he animated. But there was something about him that made his seemingly unpolished chaotic performance hilarious and showed that spark of genius.

He had already figured out he could manipulate the home audience by playing time lapse "joke bombs" on viewers who leave to go get a sandwich or go to the BR, etc...and when they return he says something absurd and the entire studio audience erupts w/ LOL.
