Update posted by her daughter.

Oxygen and PEEP both lower today, which is good news for her tracheostomy later this week. Doctors are hoping to drain some fluid from her lungs today. They have lowered her sedation so it is possible she may awaken soon this week. Keep prayers coming, y'all are so awesome thank you."

oxygen is higher I hope. why is she still having a tracheostomy next week?

good news to hear she is improving...  cheers

she can beat this.

Why the trach....She will be on a ventilator until her lungs heal. That will take awhile. With an endotracheal tube in she has to be kept sedated. If she fights the tube she could permanently damage her vocal cords or dislodge the tube. As she improves she will have to be weaned from the ventilator...forcing her body to take over. The trach is safer and will eventually facilitate weaning.

Joani, any sense yet of whether she will have permanent lung damage? I hope not, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I don't know...the one thing in her favor of not having permanent damage is her previous health. she did not, to my knowledge, have any underlying chronic cardio-pulmonary condtion.

Thank you, Joani for keeping us updated.  Like many here, I've been watching this thread as well.

Is there a chance we could lose her?  I apologize for not knowing a thing about medicine, but worry.

I also wondered if we could set up an anonymous account at a florist and send her flowers. I hate that she'd wake up and not know how we're all pulling for her.

I sent you a pm. Neko's condition is very critical and could go either way.

No flowers for patients in ICU.

Do let us know if there is anything we can do, at all.

Thanks for keeping us informed Joanie. My friend Denny passed away this morning and I got a call from my wife. The H1N1 is deadly. He went within two days of being in the hospital, so I am encouraged that Neko is fighting a good fight. This has been a really bad day with my daughter and wife pretty much freaked out and probably letting some built up steam off with this loss. There are no guarantees in life and no guarantees that prayer will just be judged by volume or commitment. Some things we simply cannot figure out. I am taking a positive attitude and look forward to sharing my stories of their father, and my infamous going into the stands to hand him the whistle. I sat for six years getting bleacher butt watching our kids, and he never missed a chance to embarrass his daughters......that is what dads are for......each day Neko is fighting, I am getting a much more positive attitude, and pray that I can simply get her pissed off at me.....for most of next year.

Thank you so much for your updates.  I don't post on this much as there is little I can  do but keep Neko and family in my prayers.

Remember when we were so young and all we could wish for was to be older?  No one told us this was part of getting older.

My condolences, Seaoat. This is very worrisome for Neko.

This is very worrisome for Neko.

The longer she is fighting, the better I feel. My friend was having problems breathing and literally three days later he was dead. The longer she fights this without deteriorating further, the better it is. The body is amazingly strong, but this H1n1 is simply nasty, and the longer she fights the better her chances with this nasty flu virus. I hope at some point soon we will hear she is getting improved lung function. I am so happy she is sedated.....I cannot describe the feeling of trying to catch a breath.....and simply not being able to. Retired Leo and I would trade stories back in 2008, but I have found since the left upper lobe was removed my right lung with its three lobes has picked up a great deal of my breathing. The fluid in the lungs must be drained and allow for the lung tissue to recover. It is amazing how quickly once obstructions and fluid are removed that the lungs gain back function.

Neko always struck me as a very strong willed lady. I hope that strength will help bring her through this.

Is Neko aware that she is so sick? I am sure I am using the wrong terms, but is she conscious or lucid? Is she not awake just due to the heavy sedation?

This is so sad. I am glad there are signs of some improvement.

Good comment, Markle, the bulletproof shield of our youth grows smaller with every year.

Ugh, can't get her off my mind. Isn't her daughter a junior in college now?
She must be going through hell.

IDK about Neko, but when my MIL was on a respirator she was neither conscious nor lucid. She was very heavily sedated.

Sorry Queen, I didn't see your question. Like Birdy said, she is heavily sedated so that she will not fight against the tube and ventilator.

I beg of everyone to remember Neko in your thoughts and prayers.

certainly have been. Its a terrible thing to have a very sick loved one in the hospital any time but during the holidays makes it even worse.

From her daughter.

"Her eyes are tracking us better today and her tracheostomy is set for tomorrow morning. Prayers that procedure goes well. You all are so amazing."
