SeaOat, wasn't 2012 the hottest on record for the USA? That's what I remember seeing. And yes, WTM is right, Australia has been exceedingly hot.

When I was in college studying science (early '70's), Global Cooling was all the rage... not Global Warming. All the experts were claiming we were headed into an ice age.

I have no idea what is happening globally...

You do realize this is Iowa you're talking about and the wind chill factor started out at twenty below today?

What do you think is covering the rivers and lakes?

Yep.....feeling the same cold spell....nope I am talking about the last two weeks......that river that flooded in 2008......was that not flowing without an ice cover for the last two weeks.......?

The odds are we will have another glacial maximum... in the next few hundred thousand years...

give or take a few hundred thousand years.

Having spent a great deal of time in academic environments and having done research, I put a great deal of credence in peer reviewed journals and less in non academic sources.....like a blog being ran out of a basement with a bookcase turned horizontal, with piled books and a guy screaming profanities......he may have just discovered the next biological breakthrough, but I will read the science journals first.....my experience has been rewarded by knowledge gained by real science and real knowledgeable folks writing and attributing their sources....you know.....science, not internet links pulled randomly out of the internet plasma.

that's all well and good and there is a LOT of disinformation out there for sure....quite a bit of it from our beloved government agencies...so it may come from a PHD for hire...so even your peer reviews don't count a lot ......

You are dead cinch correct. Look what BP tried to do after the spill.....buy the science.....nope....you hit that nail square, so the one truth is that we all must be much more skeptical of information and find trusted sources which show that they have not been bought off........this was much easier thirty years ago.....it is tough now.

I had duck hunters come to the south end of the islands Sunday......never seen that in my life in January.....We are warming at an unbelievable rate.....and I am hearing about sun spots and a mini ice age.......geeeezzzz.

What I have seen since early December scares the hell out of me.

yes, sure. you know it all. all these astrophycist know nothing. Tis whole thing about the sun spot activity slowing down well nasa is just stupid.

The solar cycle may be going into hiatus, like a TV show." Hill and colleagues reported on a jet-stream-like flow within the sun that they have been monitoring since 1995 using "helioseismology," the study of sun-wide oscillations of the solar surface. They expected the next cycle's jet to appear in 2008 or 2009, but it's still a no-show.

together, the scientists say, the three trends suggest that no visible solar cycle will begin at the next expected start time, around 2020. Such a gap last happened during the Maunder Minimum 400 years ago. But other researchers are cool to the idea. Solar physicist Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado

seaoat, its not just poo little dumb chrissy talking about it, theres plenty of scientist talking about it.

chicken leg Razz

Chrissy in case you haven't figured it out seaoat only respects PHDs that specialize in the field under discussion...He easily dismisses everything else as unverified bloggers...

Oh come on,Teo! She posts bullshit all the time from Obama being a muslim to herself being a scientist. I can't believe you fall for her pseudo intellectualism. The majority of posters don't know any better and believe some of this crap. It is what I find most offensive about her.

I post a lot of stuff, 75% of which i am very skeptical of. I like to see after i throw the ball in the forum which way it bounces. Most play along pretty good but you always seem to want to bust my balls......

You would bust my balls if I posted it before you.......no, I learn a great deal from these forums.....people think I am kidding when I say that....nope, I am dead serious. Sometimes the craziest post has a kernel of truth....and that is what I live for. I mean I will not go as far as Dreams to dismiss everything Chrissie posts....nope....she has shown me things I would never see.....and I have learned. She just takes criticism too personal....she thinks if I question her article, that somehow I am attacking her. Bob or T will just blow me off......Chrissy takes it personal. I like to challenge everything....rarely am I busting anybody's balls.....unless I feel that they are not being honest in the discussion.....I have made more mistakes than anybody on this forum.....but if you notice....I am never afraid to say I am wrong. Skip when he was still here would make me admit I was wrong at least once a month....he was good. He was great skeptic and I miss his input.

Of course it doesn't happen that fast....

It could take months, maybe years for everyone to understand that global warming is not some False Flag liberal plan.

You have to take w/ a grain of salt everything that's posted on this forum. When I see people post false stuff and make crazy assertions, then yes, I dismiss whatever they post. When you see people who cannot render a fair judgement because they don't like somebody then they are not credible people in my opinion and their information can't be trusted.

yes and no......I have learned things from unexpected places. Sure some people may be mistaken in something they posted.....but let the first without sin cast the first stone.....I sure have made mistakes, but I try to post accurately.....unless I am fooling around.

The US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) publishes its data on conditions in the Arctic at the end of every summer, or “melt season”. This year’s details, released yesterday, show that levels of ice in the Arctic Ocean are lower than ever before.

Arctic specialist Dr Mark Serreze comments that “It's amazing. It's simply fallen off a cliff and we're still losing ice.”

Due to the increased rate of melting the Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, is now almost completely clear; 100 years ago when it was first navigated by explorers it took over two years to find a safe route through the thick, compact ice. Researchers also think that the north-east passage, along Russia’s Arctic coast, could open later this September.

The NSIDC notes that “as of today, ice extent in 2007 was 1 million square kilometers (386,000 square miles) less than the same day in 2005.”

“Why has the melt season progressed so quickly? The answer lies in a combination of high temperatures, changes in the age and thickness of ice, and fluctuations in atmospheric circulations.”

If the increased rate of melting continues, the summertime Arctic could be totally free of ice by 2030.

Dr Mark Serreze concludes that “The rules are starting to change and what's changing the rules is the input of greenhouse gases. This year puts the exclamation mark on a series of record lows that tell us something is happening.”

Blame China..I am pretty sure America puts much less greenhouse gas out than they did in the good old dirty days....

"show that levels of ice in the Arctic Ocean are lower than ever before."

The lightest google search of earth's geologic history can debunk that statement.

The Greenies and Global Warming aficionados would like you to forget that we have TWO poles. That's right folks!

Antarctic Sea Ice Sets Another Record

Editor’s note: An update from the author has been added to this article on September 20, 2012.

Antarctic sea ice set another record this past week, with the most amount of ice ever recorded on day 256 of the calendar year (September 12 of this leap year). Please, nobody tell the mainstream media or they might have to retract some stories and admit they are misrepresenting scientific data.

National Public Radio (NPR) published an article on its website last month claiming, “Ten years ago, a piece of ice the size of Rhode Island disintegrated and melted in the waters off Antarctica. Two other massive ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula had suffered similar fates a few years before. The events became poster children for the effects of global warming. … There’s no question that unusually warm air triggered the final demise of these huge chunks of ice.”

NPR failed to mention anywhere in its article that Antarctic sea ice has been growing since satellites first began measuring the ice 33 years ago and the sea ice has been above the 33-year average throughout 2012.

Indeed, none of the mainstream media are covering this important story. A Google News search of the terms Antarctic, sea ice and record turns up not a single article on the Antarctic sea ice record. Amusingly, page after page of Google News results for Antarctic sea ice record show links to news articles breathlessly spreading fear and warning of calamity because Arctic sea ice recently set a 33-year low.

Sea ice around one pole is shrinking while sea ice around another pole is growing. This sure sounds like a global warming crisis to me.

It seems your source is cherry picking 1/3 of Antartica.....this source says over all 237 billion compared to 14 billion gain on one section of the three ice shields.......talk about the mainstream missing this story.....look at the credentials of the folks in CNN .........oh my.

If we are in the stages of a earth change, it clearly stated in the information I gave that weather patterns would be bizare it would be warm or very warm in some spots and cold and very cold in some spots. Just like it is all over the planet.

and if the sun is slowing down as nasa has said and if the poles have moved closer to russia as we know they HAVE. and as the jet streams have been very iratic as they HAVE. all these things and more. You would have to study the data given about what we know about little ice ages. I dont think you fully understand what one is and you are being stubborn to even study it because you have your preconvieved idea.

The point of having any discussion really is to allow an open dialog to where we cqn all seek, learn, discuss and yes sometimes postulate, hypothesize and YES especially sometimes imagine the unimaginable "what ifs" and taking our own minds one step futher pass the information gathered. I call this thinking for myself.

I see all you want to do is argue about the data so I dont know why you even bothered. we have enough of those fucken threads on here already.

I take your global warming mania with a grain of salt. The science these global warming scientists use is faulty and politically motivated. There are plenty of scientists who have looked at the 'scientific method(?????)' used by your global warming experts and have distanced themselves from the global warming hysteria. Fudging the results to prove a theory does not lend itself to true science.

The climate has always been in a state of flux and will continue to do so long after the human race ceases to exist.

You never answered my question. You and I are not climate scientist....nor is anybody on this forum. I made it easy. I asked you to describe what was happening in Iowa from Christmas until about January 21st. I have never in my life seen such mild winter conditions. Now today......its colder than I have felt over a year. No, do you not agree with me on how mild this winter was until this cold snap? This alone proves nothing....I am simply trying to see if this an isolated warm winter or more wide spread.

boards of FL

I ran my air conditioner for a few days last week.

That is, the temperature here during the winter was so uncomfortably warm last week that I employed a system that artificially makes the temperature lower in my house, and more tolerable...in January...during the winter...air conditioner.

How do you think humans would make out?

I do admit it's cute when people think our tiny recorded history can tell the future... it's like getting life lectures from a teenager.

Look I was a geology minor in College....I actually studied glaciers and the land forms during the various periods of the same.....but nobody is talking about a normal trend or cycle.....things are happening very very quickly......our geological history has indicated that there have been times in our history when things have also happened very quickly. In my life span of 61 years I am seeing some amazing changes, and the politics of this do not matter a bit.....the warming, my experiencing personally 6 major floods in 9 years, 2 hurricanes....back to back......and a river that did not freeze until yesterday....you are up in Northern Michigan at times....tell me.....am I losing my mind....or was this the mildest winter in your life up until yesterday?

If the ice at the North Pole is melting and the ice at the South Pole is increasing, I postulate that the Northern Hemisphere is getting more sunshine. Is there a tilt change underway?
