“Voices, chaos in the background”: mom recalls Kentucky school shooting victim’s last phone call

Fifteen-year-old Bailey Holt was one of two students shot and killed by a classmate at Marshall County High School.

Fifteen-year-old Bailey Holt tried to reach her mother by phone on Tuesday — as a gunman in her school in Marshall County, Kentucky, opened fire. But her mom never heard from her.

“She called me, and all I could hear was voices, chaos in the background,” the mother, Secret Holt, told a local CBS affiliate. “She couldn’t say anything, and I tried to call her name over and over and over — and she never responded.”

Bailey’s mom found out her daughter had died soon after, when she did not get off buses used to transport students to another school. “We waited and waited for her to get off the buses and she never did. The principal at North Marshall came and got me, and took us outside, and we got in a cop car, and they took us to the fire department and told us what had happened,” Secret said.

Bailey was the only victim to die at the scene of the shooting. A 15-year-old boy, Preston Cope, later died at a hospital. Eighteen others were injured, including Bailey’s boyfriend. The gunman’s identity has not yet been released because he is a juvenile.

“Even though [Bailey] was 15, she had already decided her career was going to be a labor and delivery nurse,” Secret said. “She helped others. … She was just so kindhearted and the most amazing kid anybody could ever ask for. Her smile could light up the room.”

On the person who killed her daughter, Secret said, “It’s just so hard to believe that somebody in a split second could take two lives and injure so many in just a short amount of time. I don’t know if I can go to court and see him. I just don’t know if I can, but I want him to pay for everything he’s done. I also want to pray for him, too, because I know he’s probably having a hard time too, but he took our baby. He still took my baby from me.”

The shooting was at least the 10th school shooting so far in 2018, according to data from Everytown for Gun Safety. Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, there have been at least at least 1,592 mass shootings in the US, with at least 1,801 people killed and 6,404 wounded.

Based on the research, a major cause of all this bloodshed is America’s abundance of guns. The research consistently shows that where there are more guns, there are more gun deaths. The US, for one, has the most civilian-owned guns out of any country in the world — and as a result, it has the highest death toll from guns out of any wealthy nation.

Tighter restrictions on firearms could help. In 2016, researchers reviewed more than 130 studies from 10 countries on gun control for Epidemiologic Reviews. The findings were clear: “The simultaneous implementation of laws targeting multiple firearms restrictions is associated with reductions in firearm deaths.”

But America simply has not been able to seriously confront its gun problem, even as these massacres keep happening. For more on why, read Vox’s explainer.

Victims' families: Jealousy drove car wash shooting suspect

A man suspected of gunning down four people at a Pennsylvania car wash was driven by jealousy, according to family members of the shooting victims.

State police said Timothy Smith, 28, was armed with a semi-automatic rifle, a .308-caliber rifle and a handgun and was wearing a body armor carrier without the ballistic panels inserted when he opened fire early Sunday morning at Ed's Car Wash in Saltlick Township, a rural town about 55 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Twenty-seven-year-old William Porterfield, 25-year-old Chelsie Cline, 23-year-old Courtney Snyder and 21-year-old Seth Cline were all killed.

Smith was on life support Sunday and not expected to survive after suffering a gunshot wound to his head. State police said it was possible that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

Suspects in five homicides tied to neo-Nazi group with Tampa Bay connection

By Kyle Swenson, Washington Post
Published: January 29, 2018 Updated: January 29, 2018 at 08:43 AM

Earlier this month, when the body of California college student Blaze Bernstein was pulled from the loose dirt of a public park in the Orange County foothills, questions swirled about a motive. He was stabbed 20 times.

The 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania sophomore was gay and Jewish, and local law enforcement announced they were investigating whether Bernstein’s death was a hate crime. The arrest of Samuel Woodward, a 20-year-old former high school classmate of Bernstein’s, only intensified the speculation.

Last Friday, ProPublica published a piece linking Woodward to Atomwaffen Division, a relatively new Charles Manson-obsessed neo-Nazi outfit that defines itself as a "revolutionary national socialist organization centered around political activism and the practice of an autonomous fascist lifestyle."

Quoting three sources with knowledge of Woodward’s recent past, the investigative news site reported Woodward joined the hate group in 2016 and attended a three-day training camp with other members in Texas. Pictures from the event captured Atomwaffen Division members in skull masks, making Nazi salutes.

The website reported that the training included lessons in firearms and hand-to-hand combat, preparation for the group’s "ultimate aim of overthrowing the U.S. government through the use of terrorism and guerrilla warfare."

According to the Anti-Defamation League, Atomwaffen - German for "atomic weapon" - cells have been "reported in multiple states, including Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, Washington, and Wisconsin." The group’s "vile propaganda often promotes violence against minority communities, including LGBT people, Jews, Muslims, and African Americans."

And although experts say there may be only 80 members in the organization nationwide, Bernstein’s death is the third high-profile killing connected to Atomwaffen in the last year.

Woodward is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday. He has not yet entered a plea, and his attorney has not commented on the ProPublica report.

The Atomwaffen Division makes clear on its website that their organization disavows "keyboard warriorism" in favor of real-world activity.

"Joining us means serious dedication not only to the Atomwaffen Division and its members, but to the goal of ultimate uncompromising victory. With this means only those willing to get out on the streets, in the woods, or where we maybe ?sic? in the world and work together in the physical realm," the website says. "We often go hunting, adventuring, and a group favorite is urban exploring."

A video on what appears to be a YouTube channel affiliated with the group captures footage from a "Doomsday Hatecamp," including images of members burning the U.S. Constitution, hiking the woods and pouring drinks out "for the martyrs now and the martyrs yet to come."

"Atomwaffen members have a macabre fascination with serial killer Charles Manson and his vision of a race war between whites and blacks," the Anti-Defamation League reported. "For this reason, in 2017 . . . Atomwaffen members sought out neo-Nazi Manson devotee and former American Nazi Party member, James Mason, and republished some of his writing, including ‘Siege,’ a book based on a collection of newsletters Mason wrote in the 1980s."

The group first surfaced in the mainstream in May 2017 when police in Tampa arrested 18-year-old Devon Arthurs for allegedly killing two of his roommates, 22-year-old Jeremy Himmelman and 18-year-old Andrew Oneschuk.

As The Washington Post’s Amy B Wang reported, Arthurs later told police "all of them had been friends with a common neo-Nazi belief." Arthurs, however, converted to Islam and killed his roommates, later telling Tampa police Himmelman and Oneschuk were planning terrorist attacks, including the bombing of a South Florida nuclear power plant. ProPublica reported all three were affiliated with Atomwaffen Division.

A fourth roommate, Brandon Russell, was also arrested. According to a federal criminal complaint, Arthurs told law enforcement Russell had "threatened to kill people and bomb infrastructure." A search turned up an explosive substance in a cooler at the property. Russell admitted he had manufactured the explosive substance, and also told police he was a neo-Nazi who belonged to the "Atom Waffen."

The Tampa Bay Times reported that Lyssa Himmelman, the sister of one of the dead roommates, dismissed claims the four men were neo-Nazis as "lies." She described her brother as "a wonderful guy with a good heart."

Russell pleaded guilty to illegal possession of explosives. He was sentenced to five years in prison. Despite confessing to the killings at first, Arthurs had pleaded not guilty. ProPublica reported that he is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation to see if he is fit for trial.

The Atomwaffen is also linked to the bizarre murder of Scott Fricker, 48, and Buckley Kuhn-Fricker, 43 in their Reston, Virginia, home last December.

As The Washington Post reported in January, the couple had been pushing their teenage daughter to break up with her 17-year-old boyfriend after discovering his Nazi beliefs on social media. Police say the boyfriend then killed the parents and turned the gun on himself. He survived but remains in critical condition.

Two months before the shooting, the teenager allegedly mowed a 40-foot swastika into a community field’s grass. He has been charged as a juvenile with two counts of murder.

The HuffPost tracked down the suspect’s Twitter account, where he shared Atomwaffen Division posts, including material on James Mason’s reprinted "Siege" book. The teen is currently being charged with two counts of murder.

This is, unsurprisingly, a ridiculous comment. These mass shootings started well before Trump. Trying to blame Trump for them damages your credibility and is exactly the kind of partisan commentary that makes things worse not better.

Trump promised to end the “American carnage.” Gun deaths are up 12 percent

Gun deaths are up over 12 percent year-over-year. Firearm injuries are up nearly 8 percent. The number of children under the age of 12 shot by a gun has increased by 16 percent, while instances of defensive gun use are up nearly 30 percent.

Citing "the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential," President Donald Trump promised in his inaugural address that "this American carnage stops right here and stops right now." But the numbers above from the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks shootings via media reports and law enforcement records, show that in the first 200 days of 2017 the carnage has only gotten worse.

In the first 200 days of 2014, for instance, the Archive's team of researchers tallied 6,206 gun deaths, not counting suicides. Three years later that figure has jumped by well over one-third, to 8,539 fatalities.

At least 17 dead in Florida school shooting, law enforcement says

At least 17 people were killed Wednesday in a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said.

The suspect, 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, is in custody, the sheriff said. The sheriff said he was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons.

aw enforcement responded to reports of a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly before 3 p.m. The shooting sent students and staff streaming out of the school in a panic. Some students said a fire drill earlier in the day added to the confusion.

"I don't want teachers to have guns. I want certain highly adept people -- people that understand weaponry, guns." Donald J. Trump

Armed sheriff's deputy stayed outside Florida school while mass killing took place

The armed school resource officer assigned to protect students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School took a defensive position outside the school and did not enter the building while the shooter was killing students and teachers inside with an AR-15 assault-style rifle, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Thursday.

Israel suspended School Resource Deputy Scot Peterson on Thursday after seeing a video from the Parkland, Fla. school that showed Peterson outside the school building where the shooter was inside and attacking.

“What I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of Building 12, take up a position, and never went in,” Israel said.

He said Peterson was armed, and was in uniform, and should have gone into the building during the 6-minute event, which left 17 people, most of them teenagers, dead. When asked what the deputy should have done, Israel said: “Went in and addressed the killer. Kill the killer.”
