I am always amazed by the amount of Key Lime pie they give you. We all ate too much, but my bil wanted to go to Flounder's because he loved their key lime pie. Well, when we were done nobody had room for dessert. I insisted on getting it to go and they brought us a box, and the damn thing was half a normal pie and heavy as hell. I remember back in the day when I had been on the golf course drinking in the sun, and then getting the wives and going to flounders and drinking pretty heavy, where they bet me I could not eat two of the portions of key lime......I did, and proceeded to get sick that night. After seeing how heavy the take out dessert was, there almost has to be a half pound of sugar in the damn pie.

I have never been to Flounders but I hear people talking the place up all the time , Im going to have to go check it out.

Flounder's is good -- and they  have the best Bushwacker on the beach -- but Pegleg Pete's food is better, IMHO.   Still, cool1, you're right --you have to get to Flounder's at least once, and be sure to look around inside at all the fascinating artifacts.

Sea is right about the key lime pie --it's a triple decker threat, diabetes on a plate, but do it at least once.  One huge slice easily feeds four, and keep in mind I'm a big eater.

Also, I suggest you not make the mistake of ordering their mountainous seafood nachos 'appetizer' plate unless you plan to practically make it a meal among a few people or take much of it home (where of course it will quickly become soggy).

Portions on just about everything at Flounder's are sized for beach vacation appetites -- huge.  You certainly do get your money's worth.

Uh-oh, sorry, I shouldn't have gotten started on restaurant food, one of my favorite subjects, as sea surely recalls from PNJ days.   I'm insufferable on the subject.  Smile

Just glad you guys had a nice time last night.

The Pegleg's grouper sandwich is my hubby's fave, too, knot! He also likes the fried catfish -- fried stuff being only a rare treat due to his history of heart disease, so he saves it for the good stuff at Pegleg's.  We also both love the fish chowder -- gotta have a cup every visit.

My own favorite meal there is the grilled Gulf shrimp- I order light on the seasonings, and usually pick sides of new potatoes and broccoli.   The jumbo shrimp is UNFAILINGLY moist, tender and flavorful -- the best grilled shrimp anywhere around here, I'm convinced.

Just did that last Saturday night, in fact.  (But yeah, if I lived as close as you do, I'd go bankrupt on restaurant charges. Ha.)

Sadly, Spring Break is ramping up and we won't likely be able to get into Pegleg's of an evening without a very long wait, for the near future if not all the way to and through the coming season.   Even last Saturday they predicted a 60 - 75 minute wait, but fortunately it was actually "only" 40 minutes.   Long enough, especially as we're not interested in sitting at either bar, especially not the loud Underwhere Bar (old fogies).  We waited in the car.

Pegleg's and Sidelines are a veritable gold mine for the Ambersons, I have no doubt.

Apologies again --probably boring everyone to tears.

I hate shrimp :-(

If it lives in a shell or walks on the bottom, I will not eat it. I do love fish, however.

Juana's used to have those items, I think, and maybe still does?  I've never tried them.  And grouper throats is one thing I just could never get interested in.  Sort of like escargot -- can't get past the thought.   Smile

I cannot get enough of escargot. The casino in Illinois where I play most of my poker has a steakhouse. What I do is take a forty five minute lunch break from Poker where they put a sign on your chips and you have forty five minutes to eat. I go to the bar area of the upscale restaurant and order escargot which comes in a plastic formed platter where the snails are smothered in butter and garlic. They also give you a loaf of fresh bread, and I have a virgin bloody mary which is free at the casino. My grand total for lunch is eleven dollars. A number one meal at Macs is only four bucks less expensive, but this lunch is a treat and for some reason I now crave butter and have always loved garlic and the escargot is as good as anywhere I have had the same. Having been to a chicken slaughterhouse.......I quit thinking about what I am eating and celebrate the wonderful flavors....I am a snail nailer.

I never do the odd parts. Mad And I've never had snails.

Fell in love with grouper at Aegean Breeze in Gulf Breeze. Haven't been back there in years. Is it still there? It was on the backside of a little office complex?

No snails for me, either. Organisms like squid, shrimp, clams, and mussels are great for fish-bait, but not for my consumption.....

Grouper is one of my faves (just hold the crabmeat stuffing). I really love scamp. Flounder is good, as is mahi mahi. I like farm raised catfish, too.

We have been buying lots of Icelandic cod at Publix lately. Been eating lots of fish and chicken and way less beef for my heart. I did have a double cheeseburger from Burger King Wednesday night (wife wasn't home to police me), and it was heavenly.

Aegean Breeze is still there in the Harbourtown complex and still serving grouper.  Sadly, it has changed some.   The owner and chef Stavros Varvouris sold the place a little while back, though he remained on as chef.  But then Stavros himself died of a heart attack just before last Christmas, at age 62.  Very sad, and somehow things are just not the same.  For one, I'm told, he'd never written down the recipes.   The new owner has hired a chef (George something-or-other) who worked with Stavros at a Pensacola restaurant many years back (The Angus), in hopes George would know some of the recipes.
Well, we will continue going on occasion, but things (including food) are definitely  not the same, and they are supposedly revamping the menu completely soon if not already done.
I'm pretty sure that's where I first saw grouper throats on a menu (specials board) but now there are very few daily specials and nothing like that available.  We have noted the place is not nearly as busy as in the past, and are afraid it may not survive.  Hope we are wrong.

More later (threat, not promise - ha),     LL

I should have returned earlier.

I'm kinda picky on restaurants as they have to meet my need for atmosphere, great food, personality, just the right amount of hospitality, etc.

I cook quite a bit. Laughing

Angus, back in the day had fabulous seafood. Well prepared and a favorite for a Steak House.

When I was a child my mom always bought Snapper throats. Delicious. Grouper is fantastic and I enjoy grilled amberjack.

Unlike Z-man I love fried mullet, shrimp and oysters. We went to Joey Patti's Friday.....when fried mullet is served and it curled in the pan while cooking....it is really fresh.

You don't consider "cheeks" odd parts??    lol

Snapper throats! ! think that was it, not grouper throats, at Aegean! Still, I can't picture that. Keep thinking all bone. Should've ventured a try when I had the chance, I guess, but there was always something I wanted more.

As for oysters, sadly, I'm allergic to them and most if not all other mollusks (clams, scallops, mussels et al -- and maybe snails but have never had the guts to try them). And speaking of guts, that's what gets all roiled up when I eat the aforementioned. Serious gastrointestinal distress. Haven't tried any of them since the 1980's and won't. Could've outgrown it or the reactions could be worse. Can't risk it.

Does anyone worry about eating mullet around here?

Presume you're not eating fried fish, though, right? How do you prepare the cod?   I've always considered that a rather strong tasting fish but don't know that I've ever tried the Icelandic variety, if that makes a difference.

We, too, eat very little red meat (beef, pork, lamb & veal) for heart health, especially hubby's due to history of troubles.    Totally get the heavenly treat of a double cheeseburger.   We treat ourselves to a beef burger a couple or maybe three times a year, tops -- faves are at Sidelines and Holiday Inn Resort on the beach.  The latter serves a delicious fat burger on a "sweet sourdough" bun that's out of this world.  Sundays we cook a homemade turkey burger on the grill, but it's nowhere near the same....

No bones in the Snapper Throats.

OK, but what do they taste like? Just the same as the rest of the fish flesh, or totally different?

They are awesome. Mom always fried them. They taste meatier than regular snapper fillets.

I spoke of grouper fingers yesterday. Had some today for lunch. So good!

During snapper season I go to the marina and skulk behind the tourists arriving from a long day on the water . . . . when the fish are cleaned I ask for the carcasses (for crab traps) then go home and take the throats, a real pain to do which also is why I would NEVER mention that to clientele to save the captain from having to take the extra time to extract the throats.
Linda the texture of the throat is totally different . . . . more dense.
Delicious . . . . . . a real treat!
