Honestly, was never a big fan.....just so damn sad all the time.....he had a tough childhood, and alcohol abuse was passed down just like the color of his hair.......that lawn mower story may have been funny for some......having seen alcohol abuse as a child......not very funny. He had suffered and his music reflected the same.....just never could get into him but with all that abuse to live into his 80s.......the human body and spirit is a powerful thing.

He was an icon of the sad and lonely, drunk, jilted, and ruined people of the world. His songs were all about his life experiences. His music will live forever or as long as there are beer joints and and lonely people.

This piece is not by George Jones or even written by him but it was a huge hit of his and it describes his life and his love of the bottle.

Reminds me of the old days of country...going to an old dancehall with my parents...George showing up too drunk to perform.

hence the name or moniker as 'No Show George". I agree what others have said regarding his life and his music. My comment is his success was due in large part to the melancholy and forlorn qualities of his voice coupled with his Tennessee accent . . . . you can hear sadness and life experience in that voice.

That's why some people used to refer to country as "crying in your beer music."

I saw him twice and he was incredible....stunning vocals.

This was written by James Taylor and recorded by both himself and Jones, and Taylor is on backing/harmony vocals on this version.

I loved his music.

Great tune . . . . interesting tidbit you provided about James Taylor that I certainly did not know.

I was reading about Mr. Jones's death in the Tennessean this morning and I read that he got down to a mere 105 lbs. at the height of his drinking binges. Why do so many talented/gifted artists fall prey to alcohol, drugs, etc., I'll never know. . . . perhaps because they are human?

....................................................

Far too many jokes have been aimed at the "tortured artists" searching for their inner angst and crisis management center. There's always been a connection between creation and deconstruction; brilliance and self abuse. I've seen it in my own circles....artists who struggle with addictions and problems in their personal lives.

Writers, painters, musicians, singers, actors....all uniquely qualified to wind up as victims of their own appetites.

Yep....they're just humans.

Very sad to hear the news. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is the saddest song ever written and nobody on the planet could do it like George Jones.

RIP Possum.

You will be missed.

I wasn't a George Jones fan either. Didn't think he had a great voice but he could write some sad songs. But then again Tim McGraw doesn't have a great voice either in my opinion.
