If blame is to be placed, how about pharmaceuticals and the providers themselves.

In the US, Avastin (Bevacizumab), a common cancer drug averages around $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 per treatment and does not cure cancer, only prolongs life by about 4.7 months.

It costs a hell of a lot less than that to produce Avastin, so why the high cost of treatment? It is simply because the doctors and pharmaceuticals want to get rich at our expense. They could charge half that much and still make a hefty profit.

It's as if those doing the classifying aren't aware that most people's opinions fall squarely in the gray area. Also, there are those like me who hold positions that clearly fall under both categories along with moderate positions that would be considered fence-riding by the official forum point-of-view classification committee.

I'm a comrade when it comes to health care and gay rights and a patriot when it comes to gun rights, taxation and issues of eminent domain. Laughing

From now on, I wish to be referred to as a patriocom, if you please.

Exactly! I have some middle of the road opinions when it comes to some things but I will always be known as a liberal progressive grunt. Ok w/ me. I would rather be on that side than the wackos on the extremist conservative side.

I have a friend that is going through cancer treatment at the present time using Avastin(Bevacizumab). Here is the line item listed on his EOB.

J9035 - Injection, Bevacizumab $32,719.35

Exactly my point. We could and should charge less for these drugs but greediness is the norm in this country. We do not care about the lesser financially endowed. They are regarded as vermin and looked down upon. Who do they think they're getting all their money from? The rich people? LOL!

Oncologists say the reduced funding, which took effect for Medicare on April 1, makes it impossible to administer expensive chemotherapy drugs while staying afloat financially.

Patients at these clinics would need to seek treatment elsewhere, such as at hospitals that might not have the capacity to accommodate them.

“If we treated the patients receiving the most expensive drugs, we’d be out of business in six months to a year,” said Jeff Vacirca, chief executive of North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates in New York. “The drugs we’re going to lose money on we’re not going to administer right now.”

After an emergency meeting Tuesday, Vacirca’s clinics decided that they would no longer see one-third of their 16,000 Medicare patients

Sad

In other words, they can't overcharge the medicare patients anymore and will only keep the one's they can become rich on.

No broomrider, hospitals are a business just like any other. They have salaries and overhead to pay just like the local hamburger joint. They can't use drugs that cannot be fully paid for and that is unfortunate, but you can thank the SEQUESTER.

Geez...was there anyone that predicted healthcare problems especially with the government running things?...Maybe they should merge with the Post Office...

The Govt. runs the military you so proudly espouse and get a check from. No problems there, huh?

Nightmare....the only problems that has harmed the military is when the politicans get involved...

Here is a great quiz some of us have taken before. I think they've changed the questions lately. I've taken it twice and come out in about the same quadrant, same area each time. The position it put me in on the graph you end up with seemed to accurately reflect my attitudes & philosophy. You might, and others might have some fun taking it just to see where you fall.

Here's something I read in the Time Magazine article in the March 4th special report about health care costs. I did not realize this but here's what it said:

"By law, Medicare's payments approximate a hospital's cost of providing a service, including overhead, equipment and salaries." p. 18

If anyone can manage to find the entire article on line that would be great. It is packed with straight information that really gets down to explaining many of the reasons why our health care system is so expensive.

othershoe1030

othershoe1030

The nonprofit hospitals are raking in the dough according to the Time Mag. report on skyrocketing health care costs:

"...Although it is officially a nonprofit unit of the University of Texas, MD Anderson has revenue that exceeds the cost of the world-class care it provides by so much that its operating profit for the fiscal year 2010, the most recent annual report it filed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was $531 million. That's a profit margin of 26% on revenue of $2.05 billion, an astounding result for such a service-intensive enterprise.

The article also points out how cleaver the health provider industry and their lobbyists are in that they have managed to make the discussion about how we are going to pay for health care or who is going to foot the bill rather than taking one or two steps back and asking first of all: why does it cost us more in this country than anywhere else in the world, with, in most cases poorer outcomes?

Thanks, OS. I'll take it now and see where I end up. Usually, I am classified as a left leaning libertarian. Very Happy

Oooh. I'm getting worse by the day. Now I'm an anarcho-syndicalist (libertarian socialist.) I'm usually classified as an anarcho-pacifist.

This time, however, I'm way down on the scale and way to the left. I think I'll call myself a "really, really to the left leaning libertarian."

Ah, well. It is what it is.

I blame it all on these forums. Twisted Evil

Ive realized something. should have seen it ay back.

The left uses "GROUP THINK" and everyone else is "INDIVIDUALALITY". Hence multiple ideas or opinions coming from everyone else but the left.

The left is boring and predictable and other opinions outside of the left are beat down by the "GROUP THINK".

Its a great strategy for taking over countries and minds. Its been in place a long time and it appears to be working very well.

I wonder what the final result will be when everyone is forced by way of manipulation and grooming into thinking all alike. I can see it now, anyone who dares to think out side of "group think" will be labeled some derogatory member of society and most likely imprisoned. They should make a movie about this theory. Wink

Yella I posted how much a quote for Avastin that Medicare paid for a friend of mine that is going through cancer treatment at WFH right now.

Here it is from my earlier post. Bevacizumab is the same as Avastin.

I don't own Christianity. but its interesting you compare Christianity with liberalism, one is a religion and the other has become one.

Progressives here are whining about the cost of a particular cancer drug.

Not a single one of them has stated how much the drug company spent developing this drug, along with all the ones that failed, along with all the years of testing and the FDA approval process.

Go figure!

If anything goes wrong with one in a million patients who took the drug, these Progressives are going demand the company be sued into oblivion.

Progressives, why do you think it is that so many more new drugs, procedures and technology are developed here in the United States than anywhere else in the World?

In all seriousness, Chrissy, there was a huge and rather loose movement within the anarcho-syndicalist and libertarian socialist movements that was termed freethought.

The basis for becoming a free thinker was the ability to think critically in all parts of life, not just in the political and social realms.
