I guess all of that cheap stuff we buy from China comes with a price--for them. We can rag about the cost of environmental compliance to industry and businesses, but I don't think any American would tolerate such poor air quality where they live for very long.

China burns more coal to power its industry and electrical-generation than any other country.

I remember reading a few years ago that China was building dozens of coal powered plants every week.

That is totally what the ex reported, as well, Neko.

Also that they build 1 story per day on skyscrapers.

Beijing is an old city...I did not notice much new construction going on when we were there about 7 years ago. But Shanghai....was unbelievable. There were dozens of cranes in the skyline. They were building in that city like crazy. I've never seen anything like it anywhere.

You're talking to the ignorant, but "he" reported it's going on all over.

Do you remember the "ghost city" topic?

Well, he sent me pics and stories of those, as well.

Really, eerie stuff.

Daughter's and I are planning a trip next year out of curiosity, not to see the ex!

I have heard about the ghost cities. I do know that a lot of building went on in Beijing for the Olympics but I didn't see cranes all over the skyline when we were there.

You will have a great trip. China is fascinating. We visited 3 cities the last time we were there...Beijing, Dalian and Shanghai. We visited Hong Kong years ago, when the British still had control.

We took a taxi, while in Beijing, to visit an "old" section of the Great Wall. The section nearest Beijing that is busiest and most touristy has been mostly rebuilt over the last 40 years. We wanted to see the real deal...a part of the original wall. And we were not disappointed.

China is a country I would like to go back and visit someday.

China burns more coal to power its industry and electrical-generation than any other country.

They also use coal to heat most of their homes.

The scale they are using goes from 0-500. In the article, Bejing rated 755 with a more normal reading of 515. The highest in out country is slightly less than 200.

They are working diligently to clean up their atmosphere. They are building one ultra clean, sophisticated coal fired power plant a month and have more nuclear power plants in the planning and construction stage than the rest of the world combined.

Progressives continue to push jobs to China which helps in their quest for cleaner air and water.
