Crime will continue to run rampant until we start punishing the offenders. I don't think it will improve the way it is now. People literally get away with murder because of wily lawyers.

Lawyers, judges, cops, prison employees, and many others all feed off of crime. Death by firearms would soon be dramatically reduced if the penalty for the commission of a crime with a fire arm was a capital offense with the death penalty to follow quickly after one appeal. This will not happen because our Congress, who are mostly lawyers, would see this as the end of a money making process with taxpayers footing the bill.
