An interesting sentence from this article:

But still, the ability to work with Republicans is the third quality that a CNN poll shows Democrats want most in their next president, the first being an ability to defeat Donald Trump. And that requires more than a purely play-to-the-base strategy that ignores independent swing voters.

Scoop: Rich People Like Each Other

When did Barack Obama become a Republican? Zrc4q0ixqubxm3oe4iue

In the New York Times’ Style section today, reporter Penelope Green takes a visit to the home of a couple who is showing us that love really does trump hate. Margaret Hoover, a conservative political analyst who worked in the George W. Bush White House, and her husband John Avlon, a former editor of The Daily Beast and anchor at CNN, are married, and live together in seemingly apolitical bliss.

Avlon, a self-described centrist and author of books like Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics, and Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America, must have found it hard overcoming his strong ideals to marry his spouse, whom he met when they were both working on Rudy Giuliani’s 2008 presidential campaign. Wait, what?

Yes, that’s right, this example of love overcoming difference was born on a conservative candidate’s campaign, where the couple worked together (and failed) to elect someone who has most recently been in the news as a lawyer for the dumbest president of all time. It’s almost like it was meant to be.

The Times writes:

[Avlon] avoided Washington after Yale, and went to work for Mr. Giuliani because he believed that he could be more effective in city politics. Mr. Avlon is fond of quoting Fiorello LaGuardia: “There’s no Democratic or Republican way of cleaning the streets.”

Yeah, it’s not like there’s a widely hated and still popular policy that is directly the result of Giuliani’s “way of cleaning the streets”.

The most absurd part of this story of not-so-star-crossed lovers is the assumption that they would have any reason to disagree at all. Not only is Avlon a proponent of the toothless kind of centrism that posits that we all basically have the same goals and if we are just open to debate and assume good faith we can all get along. He’s also, clearly, fairly well off. He’s an anchor at CNN, where we can presume he makes enough money to pay for half of their their historic Gramercy Park duplex, a neighborhood in the middle of Manhattan that surrounds a private garden that’s inaccessible to everyone except a few lucky millionaires.

Hoover, on the other hand, is the great-granddaughter of Herbert Hoover, the American president best known for his ineffective response to the Great Depression. If you don’t remember from high school, the homeless encampments that popped up regularly in 1920’s America were dubbed Hoovervilles. She’s part of a political dynasty that passed down their regressive views.

It’s hard to imagine any reason why this couple would struggle to get along. They’re both wealthy. They’re both white. They both have cushy jobs in the mainstream media. They both attended fancy prep schools. Truly, there is more that unites them than that divides them.

The Times’ theory that their marriage can teach us anything about “overcoming the orthodoxies that divide us” is ridiculous. Like most political elites, these people—despite their minor differences in approach—want the same things. They want stability, to uphold the status quo that keeps them and their friends in fancy apartments and nice jobs.

Liberals (or “centrists”) may disapprove of conservative policy on a service level, and I’m sure Avlon voted for Hillary. But as we see in Congress, they have a hell of a lot more in common with rich Republicans than they do with the working class, not to mention the undocumented migrants whom the president they claim to hate is currently torturing at our border. Only a paper that represents the interests of this group above all others could mistake this convenient partnership for anything other than business as usual.

I don't think anyone knows what holds marriages together.
Neither of these people needs the other, but they chose the other.
People have made assumptions about the Clintons for years too, but nobody will ever know but them what keeps them together.

Of all the people my husband and I knew when we became engaged, I can honestly say that only one of my friends thought the marriage would last. None of his did. His family did not. My family probably thought so, because they knew my views on divorce, but I don't think they thought we'd have an easy go.

48 years later, as of next week, and most of those people are dead. My husband and I are still very happy. People outside a marriage don't have a clue what goes on inside people's houses all day long and should try not to decide, certainly not based on political views. BTW, my husband was a Democrat when we married and I was a Republican.
Neither of us cared at all. Usually there are things that hold couples together that are invisible to the outside and may never be known even after they die.

Go ask James Carvelle. I haven't figured that one out yet either, but I don't strain my brain trying.

I didn't make up the poll, CNN did. I'm still wondering what number two was.

Number two was "the right experience."

Number three was "willing to work with GOP." Obviously working with the Dems is a high priority for the GOP and Moscow Mitch. Twisted Evil

Oh, you're so good at photoshopping. You were back in the days of the PNJ too, back when some of your pictures  became so nasty that even some of the liberals complained. I think you were really nasty to Chrissy, if I remember right.

Why do you think I didn't post a picture anybody could recognize?

Wow you just noticed? LOL, I was really nasty with Chrissy but not on the PNJ, nor on this page. She was calling herself Secret Angel One back then. I didn't use photoshop and NONE of the liberals complained, they were glad to be rid of her. I don't care if anyone recognizes it, just you. So in the words of Kurt Vonnegut, "Who Am I This Time?"

Little slow on the uptake?

lol

He posts the same pictures over and over. Why would I look at them every time?

His shithole Florida sign is incredibly boring. He's only entertaining himself.

It's just a way to take up a lot of room on the thread without offering anything of value for anyone to think about.

LOL you sound just like your buddy Pkr Bunk, so who am I this time? Razz

I don't even remember what you called yourself back in the olden days, you just weren't all that important to me. But all your photoshopping has pretty much convinced me that you're the same poster I remember from back then.

BTW, Chrissy and I agreed on absolutely nothing where politics were involved, and for a very long time I disliked her very much. But I still complained about the lewd pictures that were being photoshopped of her.

Later on, she sent me a PM and apologized to me and invited me to have lunch with her at the hospital where she worked.  She had apparently had realized things were not as she had thought they were previously and wanted to make amends. I appreciated the offer, but I never met with anyone in person on that forum other than my SIL. I don't go meet with strangers I don't know personally.
But Chrissy and I made our peace, for the most part, So, bragging about harassing her really doesn't impress me too much.

That's nice considering I only posted about a week on the P-cooter page. If you remember someone from back then it wasn't me. You're the one who keeps bringing up Chrissie, not me. Somebody on this forum once said there are shopped pictures of you and your SIL on many Florida pages. Only they were not shopped by me. Believe me, I in no way care about impressing someone like you. Razz

bigdog

LOL, you must be. You keep posting that picture of me back before I had gray hair. I thought you said you were never on the Pensacola forum at all back then.

Huh.

No I said I posted on the PNJ for about a week. "You keep posting that picture of me back before I had gray hair." Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

Yep. Carry on with that. My hair is a lot shorter now and I use some lovely purple stuff to keep the yellow out. The gray is a very nice silver.

But that's not a bad picture and I look, amazingly 15 years younger!!!!!
Since it was taken 15 years ago.

You're not bothering me a bit.

Good. Let's both be happy. lol!

Oh, I am.

Glad you are too.

I can't quite figure out what the green thing coming up out of the cauldron is though. You need to work on that one.

Say it with flowers, at least I think that's what they are. Got any of those shopped photos of you when you were in the middle of your multi forum feud? Those must be a hoot.

bigdog

Nah.

Amazingly, I didn't keep them.

Sorry to disappoint.

Want some? ...just kidding. I was just getting started on Florida forums back then so I missed all that but the Pcooter invasion was talked about for years after.

At this point in my life, I really don't care who might have a picture of me hidden in their computer someplace.
Actually, I don't remember ever caring that much. The main picture that was going around was one that someone took the trouble to glean from my sister's facebook page of a Christmas get together at my house. Considering the source of the picture, it didn't take a lot of smarts to know where it had to have come from originally.
I liked it. It was a very smiley picture of me from a very happy day.

Not particularly attractive, but then I'm not.
Particularly attractive that is. Never have been.
Never claimed to be.
But I'm smart enough to know how very little that matters in life.
If I could go back pre-birth and get either smart or beautiful, I'd take smart every time.
I got what I wanted. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Along with a much, much better looking hubby than most beautiful women get, and he's a keeper.

He's a keeper and you've kept him, that's more than many a wife can say.

bigdog

LOL I'm pretty sure that wasn't a compliment.
But I'm choosing to take it as one.

So, thank you very much.
