Yessirree sir, we're the greatest country the world has ever seen. We're Awesome (according to that weird Tanturos chick on FOX).

Just ask one of the millions of homeless who spent a cold last night sleeping under a bridge or in an alley somewhere. We're truly Awesome.

Most of them choose to live that way because they don't wish to put up with the BS that the people at missions and government shelters demand of them.

Reality!

No. You just have delusion of reality and your own power in believing that a lot of people want to be told how to live or accept charity they do not want because they prefer...

Thanks again for confirming how you hate Americans who are poor. And you claim to be a Christian?

If you're so worried about it then put them up at your place... Of course if you talk the Obama's, Clinton's, Gore's, Kerry's, Biden's, etc... to donate one or two mansions each I bet they can sleep several dozen homeless in each one and it wouldn't hurt the people donating those mansions much either.

I see. So you're not willing to give of yourself and provide food and shelter to others... It's something you expect everyone else to do because you say they should. Perhaps you can have the president emplace a property tax that's not a tax throughout the land to provide homes for all and call it...

How about an economy that isn't designed to exploit the middle and poor classes on behalf of the bloodsucking 1%? How about a livable minimum wage?

I suggested that earlier in the conversation and Vikinggirl didn't like that suggestion.

No, you didn't suggest that at all. You said the people were homeless because they chose not to stay in a shelter which was totally dumb and not related to why they're homeless. You then suggested the rich people and Obama float them. If you can't make sensible comments then maybe you should refrain from embarrassing yourself.

America is the land of opportunity, and some took that opportunity and made something of themselves, and some became rich.

America is the land of opportunity, and some squandered that opportunity and made nothing of themselves, and some remained poor.

America is the land of compassion, and has provided innumerable safety nets to catch those who squandered their opportunity and remained poor.

Damaged, I understand exactly what you are saying. I've talked with homeless families who would not go to a shelter because they split up the family. So, yes, their choice was to remain on the street.

Also, most if not all of the shelters are "church" related and do have requirements.

Strings attached help can definitely be no help at all leaving the homeless person the only "choice" of remaining on the street.

Sorry, not buying that.  What you're describing is a "choice" someone makes, not a lack of help.

Sure, a shelter may tell a hungry man that he may not bring any alcohol into the shelter.  That doesn't lessen the offer of help.  The hungry man makes the choice himself.

Similarly, a court may tell a person who has lost his driver license because of DUI that he must take classes and perform community service before his license will be reinstated.  If the man refuses, it cannot be said that the court provided him no help at all to obtain his license.  The man made the choice not to follow the court's requirements.

In life, much of what happens to us is due to our choices - our choices to do something, or our choices to not do something.  Those making good choices are far better off than those who make poor choices.

In your example above, the family who refuses to let the family be separated has made the choice to stay on the street (and possibly starve) rather than survive, although not as an intact family.

The family (mom, two daughters, one son) who chose to remain on the street chose that because their son was approached by a pervert when he was separated from his family.

You question their choice?

Also, "bad choices" by the homeless is not the ONLY reason they are on the street.  Don't be so quick to toss them all into a one size fits all.

Rolling Eyes

Why is it mandatory for someone to attend a Bible study or a church service just because they are seeking shelter?

Or attend dietary, financial, hygiene, etc... training at government agencies that are supposed to be there to help?

Not saying that I agree or disagree with the requirements. Simply observing that there are people who need help who don't want strings attached to the help.

I ate at the waterfront mission in Chicago to keep from starving once, okay I wasn't starving but I was really hungry. The only "string" was you had to listen to a preacher talk up front while you slurped your soup.

Slurping your soup in S. Korea is a compliment to the chef. Very Happy

When I am hungry I can slurp like no one else....it's amazing how little you need to make a delicious soup. I think the orientals got that down to a science. We eat way too fast , myself included. Food is meant to be enjoyed, like any other pleasure.

In Italy using bread to wipe your plate clean and eat it is a compliment.

Do not mischaracterize my comment. I am not painting with a broad brush, only addressing your specific comment about "no help at all".

It's sad and unfortunate that (in your example) the poor were taken advantage of.  I might have reacted in a similar manner as the mother.  But, fortunately, in America there are many safety net opportunities, so the mother could have sought a different source of shelter/food.

I saw the other day on Father Nathan Monk's FB page (he's an advocate for the poor in Pcola) about a landlord who evicted a family 3 days before Christmas. He dropped them and their meager belongings at the women's shelter where Nathan was helping out. I'm pointing out that there is cruelty in our world - but also that there are caring people who help as best they can.  I do not know much about this women's shelter - whether it's privately funded, by government, by religious organization.  But it's there, and I hope it helped the evicted family survive and have a warm Christmas.
