At least 20 pilot whales were found dead on Thursday off Florida's southwest coast, officials said.

The whales were among a group of 23 that swam inland over the weekend near Naples, Florida, said Blair Mase, an official with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The deaths bring the total number to 28 whales that have died in waters near Florida's coast in January, puzzling scientists struggling to understand why they continue to come ashore.

Eight died earlier this week, four naturally and four after being euthanized, when a group including one pregnant female swam into shallow waters near Fort Myers, Florida.

Scientists were able to identify the group of 23 using pictures of their dorsal fins, Mase said during a conference call with reporters. Each fin is unique in the same way no two human fingerprints are the same, she said.

"Historically kind of come in spurts," Mase said. "This is unusual and something we're looking into and monitoring."

In early December, 51 pilot whales swam into shallow water in the Florida Keys, triggering a frantic rescue effort. At least 22 died.

Earlier this week Mase told Reuters tests showed the whales that died in December were not infected with the morbilivirus virus, a measles-like infection that was responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 bottlenose dolphins last year.

Mase said the eight whales that died earlier this week "looked emaciated" and when examined had empty stomachs.

It doesn't make any difference,  teo.  Whatever the chemicals and radiation are,  Rush Limbaugh will convince his audience that nature seeps the same chemicals and radiation into the oceans naturally,  just like he said with the BP oil,  and anybody who says different is a commie who hates capitalism.
And an army of dittoheads will swallow every word of it.

And when obama and all the other politicians have come and gone,  Rush Limbaugh and his clones will STILL be on the radio getting paid millions to brainwash the gullible masses into believing a bunch of bullshit.

How much oil seeps naturally into the Gulf of Mexico and other Southern waters each year?

If you do NOT know, you really can't be attempting to ridicule the comments by Rush and other can you? Well you can, but you have no credibility.

Markle,  I've seen you repeat Limbaugh's claim in numerous posts ever since the oil spill.   So a month or so ago I got really curious about this and researched it thoroughly.  You must have forgotten but I made a reply to you about it at that time.  But I'll be glad to respond again.

Before accepting at face value what that glorified disk jockey has told you,  please read what's on this page.  If you research it,  you will find that every geologist and marine biologist (who is not on the BP payroll) is in agreement with this person...

Markle,  Try to understand it this way.

The surface of the Earth is being constantly hit by millions of very small particles from space which do no damage.

But when a large object (an asteroid) collides with the Earth's surface,  it is a lot of rock impacting the Earth in a concentrated area.  And it can do a helluva lot of damage.  One collision made the dinosaurs disappear.

It's no different than numerous very small oil seeps spread over the whole ocean floor verses a giant oil spill gushing into one concentrated area.  It's just that simple.
