NEW YORK (AP) -- Maybe it's the urban dwelling of the future: studio apartments measuring no more than 300 square feet.

New York City planners believe the tiny units could be the answer to a growing population of singles and two-person households. And in a nation that's becoming increasingly populous and increasingly urbanized - and where people more frequently are creating a family of one - such downsizing may not stop here.

Christine and I built out first house for $5,000 doing most of the work ourselves. It was 672 sq. ft. And had a great room and one bedroom with a huge walk- in closet that had the washer, dryer and hot water heater in it. That was real convenient because you could do the laundry and hang it up right there. The great room was big enough that we held a wedding reception there for good friends.

It was right after Hurricane Frederic and we helped tear down two houses on Big Lagoon to get materials. We got 189 studs, header material, toilets, tub, electrical panel and a bunch of stuff for nothing but "sweat equity".

They had just built Big Daddy's at Cordova Mall and they had a whole pallet of redwood vernier siding left over that we bought cheap. Our heater was a small wood stove and we scrounged Cantonment to get red iron sandstone to make a stone floor for the stove and a wall behind it. We wuz poor but snug in that little house.
