The Treasury Department "fully licensed" Beyonce and Jay Z's trip to Cuba, according to Reuters.

"American pop star Beyonce and rapper husband Jay Z visited Havana last week on a cultural trip that was fully licensed by the United States Treasury Department, according to a source familiar with the trip," Reuters reports.

"Beyonce and Jay Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in the Cuban capital, where big crowds greeted them as they strolled hand in hand through the city and posed for pictures with admiring Cubans.

"The longstanding U.S. trade embargo against Cuba prevents most Americans from traveling to the island without a license granted by the U.S. government, though President Barack Obama's administration has eased restrictions on travel to Cuba for academic, religious or cultural programs."

The Treasury Department is led by Secretary Jack Lew, President Obama's former chief of staff.

It's long past time to end the isolation of Cuba. I spent some time in GITMO and would go visit Cuba in a second if the whole island opened up.

I desperately wanted to go to Cuba starting about 30 years ago. I kept hearing the stories about the huge quantity of antique slot machines which had been hidden away down there. Relics of the casinos which were shut down by the revolution.
Some of us (the original antique slot dealers) were getting them here and there from the Caribbean Islands. But Cuba would have been the mother lode.
I even had a friend in New Orleans who made an effort to try to find out where they might be located. But then we got to thinking about what the inside of Castro's prisons might be like and abandoned the idea.
If I'm still young enough when it opens up for more than just rich celebrities to be able to visit, I'll be on a plane to Cuba so fast it will make your head spin. Finding some of those slot machines is at the top of my bucket list.

Very sad when a 'government' (?) controls people against their will and their way of doing business halts what would become a thriving tourist destination...But opening up would allow those deprieved for YEARS a taste of freedom and reuniting families and the Castro's would lose their control...

I just watched a clip from Jay Carney in the White House press room. The reporters were pressing about this (why can the celebrities go but not all the rest of us?).
His flat response was "we have no connection to that, it's ALL up to the Treasury Department so you'll have to take it up with them".

And here all along I thought the head of the Treasury Department was a member of Obama's cabinet (essentially an employee of Obama).

If Truman had a sign on his desk saying "the buck stops here", then Obama must have one saying "Not My Job". lol

That's not true...there have always been questions when 'celebrities' are afforded the right to travel to Cuba and elsewhere...Rodman just went to N Korea and that too was wrong...Penn is just a socialist groupie that's in mourning over the loss of his idol Hugo...This really must tick off the Cuban population here in the US....some are allowed to go simply for no reason and these folks haven't seen their families in decades...
