Does Pensacola seem to get it's share of negative national publicity? I mean, let's look back a mere 36 years. What has made national attention?

We've had: (Dates are approximate.)

1) 1978: CSX Derailment: 17th Ave. Overpass - No fatalities. (I was at the old FHP station at 17th & Gregory when this one occurred.)

2) 1978: National Airlines crash: Pensacola Bay - Three fatalities

3) 1979: CSX Derailment: Scenic Hwy. - Two fatalities.

4) 1979: Ted Bundy: Arrested by Officer David Lee on Cervantes St. (I actually met and spoke with Ted Bundy.)
Pensacola's Share of Negative Publicity Ted-Bundy-9231165-1-420

5) 1993: Ladies Center Dr. David Gunn murdered.

6) 1994: Ladies Center Dr. John Britton and his escort James Barrett murdered.

7) 2001: Alex and Derek King arrested for the murder of their father.

I am sure I have missed something, so feel free to add to the list if you so desire.

The small bus crowd brought a lawsuit against the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act and chose...........Pensacola............it was not because of scholarship or wisdom.......nope......that was quite a distinction......Where can we find the most backward brain dead federal court in the Country.......what an honor.........

You are right. Thanks! I also forgot to mention the Amtrak derailment as well.

This comment I cannot add to. It has said everything, and quite well too.

The "dead intern" story really didn't get much attention outside the area.

On the other hand, Scarborough , with his national tv exposure, has been doing a sendup of Pensacola and the panhandle for several years running. Regardless of what your opinion of Scarborough is, hardly a day goes by when he doesn't tell the national tv audience what a great place Pensacola and the panhandle is. The money the chambers of commerce and tourist promotion outfits have ever spent all put together doesn't equal the free good publicity he has provided with that tv show.

Though this never made the national news, how many of you REALLY believe that Willie Junior committed suicide?

I personally don't believe he commited suicide. I strongly believe he was murdered.

It does seem really hard to believe that he would commit suicide by drinking anti-freeze and crawling under a house.
But then on the other hand if he was forcibly made to swallow the anti-freeze you would think that forensics would have shown some evidence of him resisting.

By the same token, it's hard to believe the scenario of how Jake Horton's plane went down too. That was equally bizarre.

And both events had some common elements (namely people) associated with them. People I'm too scared to mention by name. lol

Just to refresh our memories, this is how The New York Times portrayed the Jake Horton thing...

It looks as if there are more skeletons in Pensacola's closet than comes to mind. Do I see a possible mini-series here?

Pensacola is very similiar to Savannah, GA not only in size but in many other ways.
A non-fiction book about Savannah's "shenanigans" published in 1994 was on the NYT best-seller list for 216 weeks. It's called...

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil".

And don't forget the latest hot potato here in Pensacola, which is the Maritime Park, or Stooderville Ballpark an incredible boondoggle we will be paying for for many, many years. I expect when the attendance for the Wahoos fizzles out Quint Studer will unload the team and move to another city.

Another railroad noteworthy disaster in November 1979 around Molino. A freight train hit a washout and had six loads of LPG jumbo tankers and one ruptured, two blew up, three days later Red Adair (oil field specialist) came over and blew the remaining tankers up . . . . . .

I have not read the book but I have seen the movie. I am sure John Berendt's book is a lot better than the movie.

Who can forget this? I am betting you are totally correct.

I had forgotten about that derailment. Speaking of Red Adair, have you ever seen the movie "Hell Fighters" starring John Wayne?

Well, if I hadn't known what he was accused of, I would say he was charming enough but a little strange. Well, this could have been because he had some things on his mind...

The funny thing is out of all of the "well known" people I have met, people ask about him the most.

He didn't eat them. He just raped and killed young women and even a 12 year old girl I believe. There is speculation that there were many more victims that have never been accounted for as well.

Jeffery Dahmer is the one that invited young men over for lunch...literally.

Let's not forget the"Prayer Case". That really made Pensacola look good.

And Willie Jr. killed himself. He already ratted on Childers and didn't want to go to prison.

............................................

Are you talking about the dead baby in an ice chest that was brought to the Brownsville Revival so it could be resurrected...?

How'd that work out...?

I guess the un-holy spirit was only powerful enough to cause idiots to speak in tongues and get slain in the spirit. Anything useful or serious was over his pay grade.
