Do you think that the govt should take over energy completely... oil, natural gas, coal... drilling, mining, refining... the works?

They will never do that. Mineral rights are owned, bought, and sold as private property in this country. It would be like the government nationalizing your house or farm.

Just a convo w bob... I've been reading a wave of this sentiment and wanted to see who was for the idea.

But I won't be surprised if no one is for it now... but most are after a long pr agenda and a crisis or two.

Control is effective ownership anyway... just look at the coal industry.

Do another poll and ask them if they want the government to even keep investing in alternative energy, let alone own and control it. You'll probably get the same result. Solyndra saw to that.

Can you link us to some of that "wave" of sentiment?

But even with the coal industry, they must lease mineral rights from the owners of the coal, and pay them royalties for the privelege of mining it. FT is correct, the gist of the story is regulation. I don't think anyone wants the oil or coal industry to be unregulated. That is a big diffrerence from outright nationalization. If we lived in Nigeria, it would be a different story.

Never say never. Ever heard of eminent domain, if enough support was generated, enough people were wanting it then it could happen. Would be easy for the government to exercise eminent domain for the good of the people and purchase all the mineral rights. Look at Obamacare, enough people wanted it, obamacare happened, obama got re-elected. so never say never.

This is an idea already being floated by the progressives, liberals, or what ever the hell they are calling themselves now.

In the other thread you cited the daily kos and huffington post as two sources of that "wave of sentiment".

I managed to find this on huffington post...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/11/hurricane-sandy-new-jersey-york-power-outage_n_2113856.html

As you can see it's a scathing attack on a government owned utility.

What I find funny about this whole conversation is when New Orleans got ravaged by a hurricane you didn't hear any talk of nationalizing power but whoa New York gets hit with a small cat 2 and people are talking about nationalizing power. So whats the difference, New York is a Union democratic state Louisiana is not. Think about it.

The government couldn't afford to purchase all of the mineral rights from owners. I don't think they would ever just sieze them. We are not that far gone yet, no matter how close to abject socialism you might think we are.

They said we would never have nationalized healthcare and we are steadily on our way to that. Like I said never say never.

Most all people who want electricity can afford to have it. And the cost of it is not escalating at a rate significantly greater than the rate of inflation.
That's not the case with health insruance.

Excellent point. I kinda thought that was a very weak analogy....
