Nasa has rated it nine out of a maximum nine in terms of high orbital uncertainty, meaning the estimated passing distances are guess work and not clearly known, so it could theoretically come in even closer.
The asteroid, nicknamed "spooky" due to the fears, has alarmed skywatchers and is up to two-and-a-half times the size of US presidential candidate Donald Trump's 72-floor Trump Towers complex in New York.
It is expected to make the closest pass of Earth of any significant-sized asteroid for nine years and until 2027.
The asteroid is expected to pass at the cosmically cat's whisker-close distance of 302,000 miles on October 31.
Slooh Telescope internet channel host Paul Cox said: "It’s frightening to think an asteroid this size, approaching so close to Earth, was discovered only 21-days before its closest approach, which just happens to be on Halloween.
"If that doesn’t give you the chills, nothing will.”
