Thanks.

For the first time since the injury, he seemed a little improved yesterday.

And, he's much improved from where he was yesterday, today.

Feeling very grateful and relieved, although he still has a long row ahead.

How old is your son-13? I'm surprised he's asking for the advil rather than the oxycodone? I wouldn't think the advil would touch the pain. That sinus bone break is a serious injury. I hope it heals well.

He's 15.

Actually, the docs were relatively unconcerned with the sinus fracture.

They said it could cause some headaches for a couple of months, but would heal nicely and completely on its own.

The nose is looking really good.

The plastic surgeons did a great job, and now that most of the swelling has gone down, it looks really straight and normal.

It's just very, very fragile, and he's going to have to be very careful with it for the next five weeks.

He only asked for one pain med yesterday, so I think we're on a roll.

Good to hear he's doing better.

Glad his getting off the pain meds and is moving to full recovery. Do you think he is done with baseball this year, or will you let him play in six weeks?
Have you investigated a batting helmet which can protect his injured area?

That is a question for another day.

We're 100% focused on recovery at this point.

Yes.

And, he'll wear the protective device until he gets (I get) comfortable.

One of the players on a rec baseball team we coached had always played catcher....for several seasons. He wanted to change and play short stop....so we moved him. He had no fear and he would charge the ball. A ball took a bad hop and hit him in the nose.....it broke his nose and split his lip. When he was cleared to play I made him wear a catchers mask. No rules against who can and cannot wear the mask. We got a lot of flake for the mask.... but he did great.

I know I'm new to the forum and so far we don't seem to see eye to eye on a certain topic, however, I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry to have read about your sons injury, I sincerely wish him a speedy recovery.

Was there a concussion?

No.

Feeling much better, although the internal stints are bothersome.

Wants to get back to school, but no go until cleared by the docs.

Scary stuff, but that is good that there was no concussion.

Sal, my apologies for not posting on your son's injury but you know what I've been doing and it's not hanging out on the forum! I do wish him a speedy recovery and a return to normalcy in his life . . . the sooner the better but it takes time. Good luck going forward!

Please don't let him go back until you're sure he's past the danger point. It won't hurt him to stay home. Again, without going into detail, I have dealt with a broken nose and other injuries. Give him time to heal.

Stints removed this morning.

Cleared to return to school tomorrow.

No strenuous activities for six weeks, but on the road to a full recovery.

Thanks for all the kind sentiments and encouragement.

It's appreciated.

Good to read that your son's recovery is going so well. I hope he takes it easy for the next six weeks. That means no chores, Dad! Smile

UPDATE: My son played his first competitive baseball since the accident over the weekend.

They wanted to start him slow and give him a chance to shake the rust off, so they bumped him down to JV for a tournament.

He played well enough that he was immediately moved back up to varsity.

In his first game back on varsity tonight, he pitched an inning and a third, allowing no hits and recording 3 Ks.

And, he hit a double that broke a tie and won the game.

cheers

It gets better.

On the way to the tournament Saturday morning, my son says to me, "Do you think I need to wear the helmet with the protective mask?" .

My response was, "Yer Gawd damned right you need to wear it, at least until I'm comfortable.".

Well, in the second game, he hits a single, another kid moves him over, so he's on third and the other kid's on first.

The other kid is taking a pretty good lead, so the catcher tries to pick him off, and my boy breaks for home.

The first baseman catches it off the bag and fires it back home, but on the first base side of the plate.

The catcher snags it and wheels around just as my boy is sliding in and smacks him like a ton of bricks right in the friggin' face.

Knocks him flat, but he's safe.

My boy lays there for a good ten seconds thinking about it, but gets up unscathed.

Had he not been wearing the protective helmet, we would have undoubtedly been back in the ER.

After, the game I asked him if he thought he might keep wearing that helmet.

He said he thought it would be a good idea for a while.

Tough as nails.

He must get that from his mother.

Did your heart skip a beat when he got hit? Mine would have.

You might want to think about a video of your son's play. Scouts start watching early.

I immediately started yelling, "you're ok, you're ok, you're ok", I think for my own benefit.
