I wonder why this old dude wanted to go to North Korea in the first place....? The NKs found out he fought against them 60 years ago in the Korean War, and now they won't allow him to leave their country.

Of all of the places to visit, why North Korea?

Korea is a very interesting place. Maybe the allure of visiting people who were trying, at one time, to kill you was something he wanted to do. To visit, first hand, a country that lives under extreme physical and physiological conditions would be a unforgeable experience.

Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out... and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for ‘the universal brotherhood of man’ - with his mouth.”
Mark Twain

“Man is the only Patriot. He sets himself apart in his own country, under his own flag, and sneers at the other nations, and keeps multitudinous uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people’s countries, and keep them from grabbing slices of his. And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for ‘the universal brotherhood of man’- with his mouth.”

Then one who have to assume the risks of being under the control of an evil dictator. Something like this happening is not unforeseeable.

I used to live in South Korea and we were able to visit the DMZ. I think we technically went one inch into North Korea.

One article said he wanted to visit the places he had been during the Korean War before he died.

Maybe he should have gone with Dennis Rodman.
