I watched enough of the 60 minutes one to get the gist of the story. Shameful. But then I hear about people being denied needed tests or treatment by their insurance company. Also shameful.

And now I'm watching this Armey guy saying we have the best health care in the world and that there has to be incentive to research and discover treatments.


Do you think these 2 videos are proof that the government can run health care better than the private sector? I think neither of the videos prove anything about our health care, overall.

I guess I just don't see it that way. Just because there are greedy hospitals doesn't mean that gov health care is great. It just tells me we have lots of problems, but doesn't indicate to me a solution.

And I think Armey is just another windbag politician like the rest.
I think we need radical new solutions to our problems in this country, especially the delivery of health care. Mainly to find ways to bring the cost down. And neither the government nor the hospital corporations will ever provide that solution.

But you know, there are lots of factors here. What that hospital was doing was wrong, but then how many patients do they treat where they get no payment from it. I didn't watch the entire video but I bet they weren't pushing unneeded tests and admissions for the uninsured, were they?

Giving unneeded admissions and tests to indigents doesn't make profits for the hospitals.
Most of the unneeded admissions and tests went to seniors on Medicare.
That's why this huge hospital corporation is being sued for Medicare fraud.

All I know is that it shouldn't cost 6K to get a pet scan.
It's all screwed up and I don't know the answer.

I'm thanking my lucky stars that I didn't need hospitalization to treat my malignant melanoma. And that's even though my health insurance doesn't pay for anything unless I'm hospitalized. I would rather pay 100% of the bill rather than have anything to do with hospitals.

My insurance company just informed me that they may or may not pay for the Dr. ordered PET/CT scan, as the cost is $30,000.... is this normal for this test? Any input is appreciated. Gloria from Pittsburgh

That seems quite high, most numbers I have heard are about half that (not that $15K is cheap). I would make sure it gets covered prior to getting the test: although commonly used a PET/CT is often not necessary outside of initial staging (and even then alternative staging can be done).

Good God. That's crazy. I thought the 6K I have heard about was bad.

If my melanoma had been significantly larger it's very likely I would have needed a PET/CT scan to find the cancer cells in my body.
I prayed to every known god and some that are not even known to not let that happen because I would have paid the whole thing out of my pocket. One or more of the gods must have been looking out for me.

I'm glad about that for you. For the cost and for your health.
