I was visiting in Tokyo a few years ago and while at the Zoo I was startled by a cat in a cage that had a cry like a bell ringing. It was a very clear "Ding" sound. It was slightly larger than a domestic cat.

Hmmm...Not sure what that would be. Japanese zoos are not so good. They keep the animals in too-small cages. There is a newer zoo--ZoorAsia--that opened some years back that is much better than the typical Japanese zoo. Chinese zoos are horrible too. Very sad places. Just makes you sad to see animals caged they way they are.
The Singapore Zoo is very nice, though.
