Finally coming out of their post election timidity. Good for them. Now send him packing back to Nebraska. Maybe he can help Nebraska win some football games or something less meaningful aside from screwing up the military.

Big deal..... Rolling Eyes

They blocked it until February 26th. After the Senate returns from recess, Hagel will be confirmed.

Time will tell.

This morning on Morning Joe McCain said that some of this Republican push back had to do with Hagel's criticism of the Iraq war and the surge that Bush put into action. McCain also referenced Hagel's negative remarks about Bush so grudges from 7 years ago figure into this Senate drama.

McCain has become a caricature of an angry old man.

I've lost all respect for him.

It's past time for him to go away.

It does, and after the Senate returns, several GOP Senators, including Lindsey Graham, have said they will vote to end the filibuster. Then the Hagel confirmation vote can take place, and he will be confirmed. This filibustering is just a bunch of political drama that leads to nowhere. Neither the President nor Hagel intends to withdraw the nomination. There are enough votes for the confirmation. Hagel will be confirmed.

U.S Senate Republicans are certainly not filibustering the nomination of Hagel for Sec. of Defense

they are employing enhanced obstructive techniques

This is an unprincipled position based on old personal grudges pure and simple.

After Hagel is confirmed, he will become the first draftee to serve as SECDEF. He was drafted into the Army in 1967 and rose to the rank of E-5 in just two years.

As Hagel sees it, he saw the Vietnam War from "...the bottom up..." He was an infantry squad leader during his year in combat in the jungles of Vietnam, where he was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, two purple hearts, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

Unusually, Hagel served in the same squad in Vietnam as his younger brother, Tom. They saved each other's lives on more than one occasion.

Chuck Hagel was not some REMF serving away from actual combat. He has "smelled the smoke" of combat and is infinitely qualified to serve as SECDEF. Obama got something right when he nominated Hagel, and he will make a great SECDEF.
