POLITICO Breaking News
-------------------------------------------------
The Supreme Court announced Friday that it will take up same-sex marriage, hearing both a case stemming from California's Proposition 8 voter-approved ban on gay marriage and a case from New York challenging the constitutionality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

Will this court go down in history as a Dred Scott or Brown v Board court?

The govt should only be involved as the record keeper of the marriage contact and an arbiter if it ends.

There should be no benefit or exclusion between willing adults from the govt imo.

Nonsense. That is all and good, but we have a mess right now considering actuarial tables and benefits which have been bestowed on the status of a surviving spouse. Let me give an example. My wife is receiving a government pension in excess of 4k a month. Therefore after I die she will not be entitled to my social security survivor benefits. Therefore, if the court says anybody can marry anybody else without qualification......then before I die, I will divorce.....I will marry an 18 year old girl who I will enter into a prenuptial which says after I die she will pay my wife 75% of my social security survival benefits which will be payable to the 18 year old.....and that person will collect for the balance of her life.....however what 18 year old girls is going to go for that......nope, but I could get a line of men around the block which will marry me for 500-600k a month for 40 years, knowing I will croak.

The truth is that states changing laws regarding marriage require our legislative bodies to catch up and make sure the assumptions and acturial tables which are in place will work......I am all for equality of marriage....my concerns are fiscal responsibility.

Just now on NBC nightly news the report said there are about 1,000 benefits now accorded to man/woman marriages that don't apply to same sex marriage.

It has got to be a matter of civil rights. Just because it would cause legislators to roll up their sleeves and correct laws...is that a reason to not okay same sex marriage?

Is "It's too much work." a reason to not let everyone have equal rights?

We live in America, there is no such thing as equal rights. You are categorized by race, religion, gender, sexual preference, social status, personal wealth, and a plethora of other factors that enable you to receive special treatment, preferential treatment, and many other entitlements based off of the qualifying factors mentioned above. Only the naive and stupid think we have equal rights in America. There will never be true equality in American because to many people work to ensure we all get treated different.

You think people are all equal in the eyes of the law? Now that is funny.

I think they all SHOULD BE equal under the law. You find that an amusing concept?

The law Should be applied equally to all. The concept stands. The reality is of course that those with more money can hire better lawyers and human beings as they are constituted will always make judgements on their fellow man but the idea is to at least strive for equality under the law.

I realize that it's a radical concept... the govt wants in on all base human instincts.

Seaoat, there will always be ways to circumvent any law, but the scenario you propose is...uh, pretty out there. People need those 1,000 benefits of marriage...what were they again?

You're absolutely right!

All mature willing companions should be allowed to have equal rights to marry; however many, whoever, and/or whatever; they choose to form a marriage group with so long as all involved are mature willing companions.

Yes they should be and the rights of all mature willing companions should be recognized.

When the government recognizes that all mature willing companions no matter; how many, who, and/or what; should be allowed to form marriage groups, so long as all involved are mature willing companions, there will be equality.

Hallelujah!!!!!...
