Jefferson Davis School In Mississippi To Be Renamed Barack Obama School

An elementary school in Mississippi is switching out the president of the Confederacy for the first black president.

Davis Elementary School in Jackson will be renamed Barack Obama Elementary School for the next school year.
The school was named for Jefferson Davis decades ago, says CNN affiliate WAPT. But parents at the school, which is 98% African-American, proposed renaming the school to honor America's 44th president.
The switch was made possible after the board of the mostly-black Jackson Public School District decided last month it would allow the community and school PTAs the option to rename schools that were named for Confederate leaders.

Yep! I think it's cool as hell. I just hope nobody will bomb the place or shoot it up, though. It'll be hard enough for people to handle getting their Jefferson Davis name taken down, but getting it replaced with Obama will really set them off.

It's a mostly black school, though, so mostly what I've seen are a bunch of ugly racist "jokes" on a few conservative blogs. Haven't seen much in-person local reaction about it yet... other than a few friends of mine, but I mostly hang out with the kind of people who'd be in favor of it, so, so far it's getting thumbs-up.

Can't wait for PkrBoy and ALTLEFT's response to this! The horror, the horror...

I'm sure they wonder what took Mississippi so long to do the right thing.
