FBI director James Comey will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on “oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” MNSBC’s Kyle Griffin reports.

Comey played a pivotal role in the 2016 election when he revealed that former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was under investigation for a private email server she had as Secretary of State. The FBI ultimately declined to press charges.

In contrast to his unprecedented announcement about an ongoing investigation into Clinton’s email use, the FBI director failed to inform the public about a separate investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign and possible collusion with Russian operatives trying to impact the election.

The testimony will take place on Wednesday, May 3 at 10 a.m.

WATCH: FBI’s Comey gets defensive as Feinstein grills him over decision to reveal Clinton probe

FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers he agonized over the decision to reveal a renewed investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails, just days before the election — but he said he would make the same choice again.

Clinton said Tuesday that she believes Comey’s revelation ultimately cost her the election, but the FBI director said he was faced with no good options after investigators found additional emails on a private server.

“This is terrible, it makes me mildly nauseous to think we might have had some impact on the election,” Comey said.

Comey said the choice to speak was a bad option, but a decision to conceal the probe would have been catastrophic.

“I could see two doors, and they were both actions,” Comey said. “One was labeled speak, the other was labeled conceal.”

Sen. Al Franken Presses Comey: Trump’s Tax Returns Are Relevant to Russia Investigation

Two Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee today brought up the subject of tax returns, with one rather explicitly invoking President Trump in doing so.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse asked FBI Director James Comey about how important tax returns are in a criminal investigation.

But it was Senator Al Franken who cut to the chase and directly brought up the president’s tax returns as they may pertain to the Russia investigation.

He asked about why the Russians preferred Trump over Clinton and whether his business interests may have anything to do with it:

“In order for us to know for certain whether President Trump would be vulnerable to that type of exploitation, we would have to understand his financial situation. We’d have to know whether he has money tied up in Russia o obligations to Russian entities, do you agree?”

Comey responded, “I don’t know.”

Franken pointed to a few different issues that he felt raised appropriate questions about those ties, and he eventually just straight-up asked Comey if the president’s tax returns would be “material to such an investigation.” He also asked if the investigation includes access to the president’s returns.

Watch how Comey responded above, via MSNBC.

Are you fucking stupid?? [rhetorical]

Do you know what the sanctions imposed by Clinton and the Obama administration have done to the Russian economy?

The very sanctions, by the way, that Trump has suggested he might lift for no valid reason.
