The system is broken for all but a few. It works like a game of Monopoly on its own. We have entered a new Gilded Age. This is the real situation of wealth redistribution, not from the "hard working Joe six-pack" types to the lazy no good moochers but from workers of all types to the very very very rich. The system IS rigged.

Eight men own the same wealth as the 3.6 billion people who make up the poorest half of humanity, according to a new report published by Oxfam today to mark the annual meeting of political and business leaders in Davos.

Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of Oxfam International, said:

“It is obscene for so much wealth to be held in the hands of so few when 1 in 10 people survive on less than $2 a day.  Inequality is trapping hundreds of millions in poverty; it is fracturing our societies and undermining democracy.

“Across the world, people are being left behind. Their wages are stagnating yet corporate bosses take home million dollar bonuses; their health and education services are cut while corporations and the super-rich dodge their taxes; their voices are ignored as governments sing to the tune of big business and a wealthy elite.”

Oxfam’s report shows how our broken economies are funnelling wealth to a rich elite at the expense of the poorest in society, the majority of whom are women. The richest are accumulating wealth at such an astonishing rate that the world could see its first trillionaire in just 25 years.  To put this figure in perspective – you would need to spend $1 million every day for 2738 years to spend $1 trillion.

Public anger with inequality is already creating political shockwaves across the globe. Inequality has been cited as a significant factor in the election of Donald Trump in the US, the election of President Duterte in the Philippines, and Brexit in the UK.

Are you saying then that the biggest wealth gap is not a problem because it is populated to some extent by Democrats?

Are you suggesting the wealth should give up their fortune...and stop making money?

Not give up just change the system so more people have a better shot at improving their living conditions. The current situation is not sustainable.

Equal opportunity doesn't mean equal outcome.

Exactly, and that is the charge that's always thrown out in defense of the huge wealth gap we now see. No one is in favor of equal outcomes. I just think it would be better if the system were set up in a way that rewarded workers in a more equatable manner so that the top 1% or 2% did not end up with the lion's share of rewards.

People who work hard, come up with new ideas that other people want to buy should be rewarded for going above and beyond but that does not happen in a vacuum and it shouldn't disregard the needs of the average worker who also has contributed to society and has bills to pay. The rewards are out of alignment with effort.

So just giving people money is the answer? When does work ethic count for anything? Handling out money for nothing only begets more pandering.

Specifically, how is anyone being prevented from improving their current situation due to the wealth of anyone else? Not just these eight you hate, but anyone.

What Progressives cannot and refuse to grasp is that the pie is not limited in size, as the economy grows, the pie grows as well. You making $1 million does not prevent, in anyway, from my making $1 million too.

How are they NOT rewarded? Were Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak,
Ronald Wayne, Mark Zuckerberg rewarded for their hard work and risks they took? Extreme examples, of course, bu is the same not true in your own neighborhood?

If they do not, why not?
