The traditional Republican Party of Lincoln was the Party of equality and equal justice under the law. When Nixon calculated that law and order, and racism could drive a southern strategy which would have former Democrat Dixiecrats migrate in mass to the Republican Party, it tainted the Republican Party forever. The evil of Jim Crow and dog whistles as an entire region of this country lives on a steady diet of fear and hate. I am not kidding that I feel like I am in Hell when living among folks with so much ignorance, fear, poverty, and hate. I am dead serious. We should legislate that immigrants from around the world settle in the SEC states and allow in a couple generations to raise the IQ and get smarter people who can turn the region of this country who is the biggest sucking sound on the government teat into a dynamic economic immigrant economy where people actually know how to work. After Ivan the only people I saw who knew how to work were brown people, who just blew the doors off lazy stupid people. Drive around Navarre North of 98, Drive around Milton, Drive around Pace, and see the clutter, old cars, junk piled in yards, and no defined driveways, but folks parking in rutted front yards, where houses are not painted, windows are not repaired. but black garbage bags cover windows, where a blue tarp can be seen on a roof every tenth house as weeds cover yards.

My family has lived in the south since the 1700s. No member of my family ever flew or displayed a confederate flag, they kept their modest homes neat and clean, and attended church every Sunday, but they had a core belief that Blacks were inferior, and as my grandmother used to describe the third generation Italian catholic who served his country in WWII, the furenur.

She writes talks about a divided country, like intelligent people can some how become dumb as a fence post to reach compromise.......hell no. It is time to be real. Pretend time is over. Racial hate and fear is destroying this country and that caustic politics comes from only one region in this great Country.

Great article. I am that Republican. I walked door to door for Goldwater as a precocious 13 year old. I read three newspapers every day and believed strongly in less government. However, it was the Party of Lincoln. The party my relatives in Alabama hated, and my mother as a rebel piszed my FDR union man grandfather off that his daughter had become a Republican precinct committee woman. In 1968, I led the young Republicans in my high school and worked the county door to door for Nixon. I believed he could get us out of Viet Nam. I was starting to have my reservations as all my Alabama relatives in mass became Republicans in 1968, and this was just a few years after a horrible experience as a kid in North Birmingham being shunned by whites because my brother and I remained in a public pool when a couple black kids got into the pool. All the whites except my brother and I got out of the pool. I had waded in the river with black kids as a child and just could not understand this reaction as my three girl cousins got out of the pool, and after the fact they described why we should have gotten out of the pool.......I was beginning not to feel comfortable with this fear and hate.....I never could wrap my head around it, and it was taking over my Republican Party of Lincoln. I remain a Republican because at the state level you need balance, but on the national scene......I agree.....this party is dying.

Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He himself was not especially racist — he believed it was wrong, on free market grounds, for the federal government to force private businesses to desegregate. But this “principled” stance identified the GOP with the pro-segregation camp in everyone’s eyes, while the Democrats under Lyndon Johnson became the champions of anti-racism.

This had a double effect, Roy says. First, it forced black voters out of the GOP. Second, it invited in white racists who had previously been Democrats. Even though many Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act in Congress, the post-Goldwater party became the party of aggrieved whites.

“The fact is, today, the Republican coalition has inherited the people who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — the Southern Democrats who are now Republicans,” Roy says. “Conservatives and Republicans have not come to terms with that problem.”

So they deny the party’s racist history, that its post-1964 success was a direct result of attracting whites disillusioned by the Democrats’ embrace of civil rights. And they deny that to this day, Republican voters are driven more by white resentment than by a principled commitment to the free market and individual liberty.

But in reality, it created the conditions under which Trump could thrive. Trump’s politics of aggrieved white nationalism — labeling black people criminals, Latinos rapists, and Muslims terrorists — succeeded because the party’s voting base was made up of the people who once opposed civil rights.

Is not just racial hate and fear. It is the hate generated by politicians who are driving wedges between people.  Friends are screaming in friends faces over who is going to be President.  And they think Trump or Hillary will fix this shit?

If any rational person discusses issues instead of hate, fear, and fascism there is 80% consensus in America.......it is exactly your wrongheaded paradigm of thinking this is about candidates......it is about issues. It is about platforms and what is best for Americans. It is about morality and how we treat our fellow human beings.....your fricking dog whistle justification of an entire region of this country which marches lock step in hate, fear, and division among Americans.......sorry if 90% of Americans want no fly list folks to be screened during background checks on a firearm.......and you think it is about personalities.....it is not......It is about an Oligarchy manipulating stupid people. Non college educated white people favor trump by a 37% margin......it tells the entire story of the white nationalist party.

I rarely become irrational. I'm not a swing to the left nor swing to the right emotional mess.

Bring people around to your way of thinking - if it is plausible - by comparing the candidates on paper. Apples to apples. Use their campaign sites against them. Discuss. Decide. Move.
