KABUL, Afghanistan – At least 80 people were killed and another 231 wounded in the Afghan capital on Saturday, when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-packed clothing among a large crowd of demonstrators, officials and witnesses said.

In a statement issued by its news agency, Aamaq, the group ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack on a protest march by Afghanistan's ethnic Hazaras. The marchers were demanding that a major regional electric power line be routed through their impoverished home province. Most Hazaras are Shiite Muslims, while most Afghans are Sunni.

Waheed Majroeh, the head of international relations for the Ministry of Public Health, confirmed the death toll and said it was likely to rise "as the condition of many of the injured is very serious."

Footage on Afghan television and photographs posted on social media showed a scene of horror and carnage, with numerous bodies and body parts spread across the square.

President Bush announces military action in Afghanistan

On this day in 2001, less than a month after al-Qaida terrorists flew commercial jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, President George W. Bush announces that American troops are on the offensive in Afghanistan. The goal of Operation Enduring Freedom, as the mission was dubbed, was to stamp out Afghanistan’s Islamic fundamentalist Taliban regime, which had aided and abetted al-Qaida and its leader, Osama bin Laden, a Saudi national who lived in the Afghan hills and urged his followers to kill Americans.

In a televised address that evening, Bush informed the American public that “carefully targeted actions” were being carried out to crush the military capability of al-Qaida and the Taliban, with help from British, Canadian, Australian, German and French troops. An additional 40 nations around the world provided intelligence, as well as bases from which the operations were conducted.

Bush touted the multinational effort as proof that America, in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, was “supported by the collective will of the world.” He also warned that the war in Afghanistan would likely be only the first front in a long struggle against terrorism. He vowed to continue to take what he called the “war on terror” to those countries that sponsored, harbored or trained terrorists.

He lied, didn't he, Markle.  From the redacted 28 (29?) pages of the 9/11 Commission Report that were withheld for 15 years...Bush knew the Saudis had at least partial responsibility for the attacks on our country.  Poppy was meeting with the Saudi royals at the Carlyle Group, which he didn't quit until 2003.  The Bushes and the Saudis had a long history cemented by their mutual oil interests.  The invasion of Afghanistan was a distraction from the real mission...the invasion of Iraq to take down Saddam Hussein, who had tried, according to reports, to take out Poppy Bush.  Your spin won't work.  The invasion of Afghanistan was one of Li'l Georgie's first moves after he stole the office of the President...that and the "patriot act", AUMF, and secret surveillance on everyone.

Lame Duck President Barack Hussein Obama has always said that Iraq was the "wrong" war (although he falsely claimed victory when he foolishly ignored his advisers and pulled all our troops out.  President Obama has always claimed that Afghanistan was the "right" war.

Since the very start of his campaign, Senator Obama has sought to provide political cover to his opposition to the war in Iraq by being explicitly hawkish on Afghanistan. It is not that he is against war, he insists, just the “wrong” war. Iraq is the “wrong” war, Afghanistan the “right” war.
