Think about it. His first term came from a brilliant campaign that promised hope and change, to an America disillusioned by Buth's unending, unwinnable wars, and an economy that, led by Wall Street's and Big Banks loan bundling shenanigans, had brought on the worst financial catastrophe since the great depression. Millions of Americans had lost their homes and lifes' savings, millions more were unemployed. Bush's lies and financial manipulations which favored the 1% had failed miserably for all but those bloodsuckers.
Look at Obama's character: He's a devoted father, a considerate, caring man who has demonstrated an amazing capacity to further peace and happiness to all the world. A scholar who understood why we needed to present a new, open and respectful face to the millions of Muslims who had not yet been radicalized, Obama's first international steps promoted peace and harmony.
Initially, Obama faced his congressional opposition with respect, and his propositions for change were timid -- he really wanted cooperation and reason.
But, his republican opponents, driven by a hatred for anything left of
Attila the Hun, and pure, unadulterated white racism (argue what you will, but there is no question but that 50% or more of registered republicans support Trump who is an obvious racist), chose to oppose Obama and the democrats ON EVERYTHING.
Whether it was rebuilding a falling bridge, bringing healthcare to millions who had none, appointing people to federal agencies, cleaning a polluted river, whatever -- the republicans smiled and said, "No way."
So our first black President, who had promised and tried to deliver cooperative cohesiveness in Washington, was instead the propelling agent for the worst congressional dysfunction in American history.
It's so bad now, even the moderate republicans (there may be twenty or thirty left) are tired of "the establishment," and literally ALL of the Trumpions are. Oddly, in that regard, Bernie's troops and Trumps feel the same.
Trying to take small steps so as to not antagonize his republican opponents in congress, and listening to the same fuzzy-headed neocons and generals that Bush had championed, Obama's moves in the mid-east and Afghanistan were simply new chapters in the book of American foreign policy blunders.
Under Obama, we continued to fund friendly dictators, and confused and frightened our supposed allies.
Obama's foreign policy record can be described with one descriptive: disaster.
His Obamacare program continued to provide unending profits for health insurers and big pharma, which is at the heart of the spiraling costs of the healthcare program he initiated. Why did it turn out so? What was needed was a single-payer system, but gun-shy of republican opposition, Obama compromised. The result is a system that pleases very few.
Obama's economic record, when carefully explored, is also a failure. More Americans have dropped out -- given up looking for a job -- than those who have taken jobs in the new economy. Wages are stagnant, and most Americans need to work two jobs in order to just get by. Tax breaks for the richest Americans and companies continue to bleed our weakening system. Obama's speeches rail against the unequal economic system, but he has not been able to do anything of import in congress to ameliorate the situation.
If you listen to his speeches, whether he's praising a soldier-hero, or railing against a crazy slaughter of school children by a gun-carrying madman or two, it's clear this is a good man who really does care.
As I see it, Obama's biggest failure was due to him being elected at the wrong time -- way too soon for the racists -- the old white men -- whom Trump has so dynamically invigorated. America is simply too racist at this point in time to allow any non-white President to succeed.
What I mourn, as we now go forward with Hillary vs. Trump -- a champion of the establishment vs. the champion of white racism -- whoever wins this time will have even less chances than Obama did to unify our divisive and mortally wounded nation.
Reality.
