President Obama is playing hardball with Mitch McConnell.

He picks a moderate Republican who was unanimously confirmed as a Federal judge by George W. Bush's Senate (after Sandoval was nominated by Bush)....

It puts Republicans in a terrible bind if they decide not to even have a hearing for Sandoval...

It puts them in a worse bind if they refuse to confirm a man they unanimously confirmed to the Federal bench in 2005.....

This then opens the Nevada Governorship for a potential blue takeover in November....

Gotta love it!  You know Obama will get the last laugh here......

The president's next move is obvious.

He finds the most ridiculously qualified candidate he can find among whatever demographic or social group is most disadvantageous to the Republicans, and he puts that candidate up as quickly as possible. He does event after event, with the candidate by his side. He campaigns for Senate candidates in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Illinois, all places with vulnerable Republican incumbents, and he brings the nominee along with him.

To elect a Democratic president in the fall is to elect this wonderfully qualified person, a credit to the American dream and to our greatness as a people, to the Supreme Court as well. Could it be that the Republican Party's capacity to walk in lockstep off a cliff–known to medical science as The Schiavo Syndrome–has now surpassed the Democratic Party's capacity to step on its own dick when presented with a political opportunity? If the president has brought about that turn of events, his whole two terms have been worth electing him in the first place.

The problem is that this governor is not real friendly with organized labor, and you may actually have some democrats raising the spectrum of throwing the dice rather than put an anti labor justice in the court when so many collective bargaining cases are pending. The Republicans will be fools to miss this opportunity which is a real compromise candidate. Labor will be furious.

Sandoval said "no thanks". Too bad, he was a good pick that probably would have caused the R's to back down from their BS.

Good call on his part . . . . . going forward in this toxic environment would only lead to a drawn out dead end street when brighter things could easily be in his future . . .

How so?

You think the American people are really going to care all that much?   Sure ... might raise a few eyebrows & the media will make some hay out of it for a few news cycles, but bottom line is nobody will really give a crap if we have 8 justices instead of 9 for the rest of this year.

Should the Congress decide to delay/drag-out confirmation of whoever Obama nominates, I really doubt it will influence anyone's vote for anything at all one way or another.   I mean, really .... think about it.  like, what's gonna happen if they don't confirm Obama's nominee?   Will  Republican inclined voters will start voting Democrat over it?     Rolling Eyes

Face it. Obama's a lame duck. Already shot his wad. Got no juice left.
