The following are 21 facts about America’s failing infrastructure that will blow your mind….

#1 The American Society of Civil Engineers has given America’s crumbling infrastructure an overall grade of D.

#2 There are simply not enough roads in the United States today. Each year, traffic jams cost the commuters of America 4.2 billion hours and about 2.8 million gallons of gasoline.

#3 It is being projected that Americans will spend an average of 160 hours stuck in traffic annually by the year 2035.

#4 Approximately one-third of all roads in the United States are in substandard condition.

#5 Close to a third of all highway fatalities are due “to substandard road conditions, obsolete road designs, or roadside hazards.”

#6 One out of every four bridges in America either carries more traffic than originally intended or is in need of repair.

#7 Repairing all of the bridges in the United States that need repair would take approximately 140 billion dollars.

#8 According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, our decaying transportation system costs the U.S. economy about78 billion dollars annually in lost time and fuel.

#9 All over America, asphalt roads are being ground up and are being replaced with gravel roads because they are cheaper to maintain.
The state of South Dakota has transformed over 100 miles of asphalt
roads into gravel roads, and 38 out of the 83 counties in the state of
Michigan have transformed at least some of their asphalt roads into
gravel roads.

#10 There are 4,095 dams in the United States that are at risk of failure. That number has risen by more than 100 percent since 1999.

APPROPRIATE COMMENT FROM ANOTHER FORUM:..Sounds like a city near us...

_________________________________________________________________________
Here in the NW side of Phoenix, AZ the town of Surprise just paid 4
million dollars to bring water to build another Walmart (there's already
four here), and the deal cut was that Walmart doesn't have to pay any
property taxes either. All for a handful of minimum wage jobs that keep
the employees on state health care anyway.

Glendale just paid 4
million for the Coyotes hockey team to practice there. It's triple digit
temperatures here for 5 months out of the year and nobody watches
Hockey in Glendale.

The city of Surprise spent 93 MILLION
(secretly, by shifting funds around) remodeling their civic center and I
haven't talked to anyone who, besides not knowing where it is, has ever
even been there.

Phoenix spent 99 MILLION to get the Chicago
Cubs training camp here. Then the local VA hospital asked them if a
couple of players could come by and talk to the vets (WWII, Korean war,
Viet Nam) to pick up their spirits. The Cubs said "sorry, they're too
"busy".

The town here (a retirement community) bought a $250,000
on an urban assault vehicle. Machine guns, battering ram, gas injection
hose. They've never needed one. It was a huge photo op for the local
mayor and PD. The vehicle's sat in a puddle of it's own oil and
transmission fluid since they bought it. It won't run and never has.

Multiply
that by all the wasted funds around the country and you've got a
monstrous figure that could take a big chunk out of the costs of our
disintegrating infrastructure.

Our political system has proved itself to be all show and ego and NO substance.

Sounds like a personal problem.

Surprise, AZ eh? I believe that is where our County Administrator, Randy Oliver, came from . . . .

It may be because we patch repairs instead of replacing areas of decay.

I dont know about that. I seem to see a lot of new roads or bridges being built. Sure we do a lot of patching too.

but to be honest. I see a aweful lot of waste with these road crews. I sometimes see 5 guys standing around while one has a shovel.
