Hiking Minimum Wage an Inefficient Tool to Fight Poverty: Fed Research
by JEFF COX, CNBC
DEC 30 2015, 3:33 PM ET

Increasing the minimum wage is an inefficient way to reduce poverty, according to a Fed research paper that comes amid a national clamor to hike pay for workers at the low end of the salary scale.

David Neumark, visiting scholar at the San Francisco Fed, contends in the paper that raising the minimum wage has only limited benefits in the war against poverty, due in part because relatively few of those falling below the poverty line actually receive the wage.

The most kind thing govt could do for the poor and working middle class is to end the fed and stabilize our currency.

Otherwise we will perpetually wind up in this situation. The rich are able to leverage an advantage... that's the reality.

Too funny, the research takes but one slice of the demographics and declares it does not help that slice. Stupid is what stupid does..........the minimum wage can and does help working families and the overall GDP which thrives from the new demand for consumer products as working families have more disposable income.

Never has, why would it now?

ONCE AGAIN, post for us what percentage of households exist solely on the income of one wage earner making minimum wage?

What is the typical household income where one worker earns minimum wage?

Here is simple economics for those who did not do graduate work in economics, undergraduate, or take a high school economics course. This country has failed to keep the minimum wage in real dollars equal to the 1968 level. During that same time across America we saw the wealth divide begin to increase until it is the current level of divide in America which is the equivalent of third World Latin American Oligarchy in the fifties.

With the minimum wage index increasing labor gets a greater percentage than capital in America. That labor spends that capital which grows gdp. Can the minimum wage be abused. You bet. In 1968 we faced inflation which was mostly driven by a too high minimum wage level. So we must be careful not to allow the minimum wage to outstrip the real dollar levels which keep inflation at check. In these deflationary times, the quickest fix for our economy is increases in the minimum wages. During that same period of 1968 to the present the productivity of the American worker continually improved while their wages remained stagnant and our economy stagnated below optimal growth rates. It is simple economics. Increase the minimum wage slowly over the next decade and we will reap great economic benefit, and the only loser will be international capital which will not get as high of a return in America and will not OWN America like we were a third world country which the Oligarchy had stolen the land and owned 90% of everything. Economic trends can be reversed and increasing the minimum wage is a positive step in returning balance between capital and labor.

Flash: Raise in minimum wage to restaurant workers in California has not resulted in any layoffs. And the workers have more money to spend.

Those are the kind of facts that really count!

The unemployment rate of California has nothing -- nada -- zip to do with the subject, which is what happens when the minimum wage is raised for workers. Once again, no restaurants were closed as a result of the raise, nor were any employees let go. Too bad your kind of thoughtless argument can't stick to the subject .... LOL

Thanks for proving my point.  Tell us again how raising the minimum wage ALWAYS results in people losing their jobs ...

Amusing as always.

You state that the minimum wage has no effect on jobs. Then, when shown that the unemployment rate is far higher in California than the rest of the nation, you say it has nothing to do with the topic.

You are most certainly amusing and becoming an even better foil than ever!

Your comprehension of stats and the use of the same is sophomoric. First, you use the current California unemployment against the national rate of unemployment which says NOTHING about the impact of minimum wage in California. Now if you took a ten year trend line of the same and saw movement of unemployment in California rise in relation to a ratio established over those ten years, this may be relevant. However, what you are unable to comprehend with your pedestrian use of stats is that your stats may actually prove Word's thesis. Please learn to post relevant stats and the context which can allow you to make a truthful statement.

Sorry dimwit. Your bullshit doesn't fly. The subject is the restaurant workers whose pay was raised. In their bracket, so far no jobs have been lost. And the wage change was so recent it wouldn't be reflected in the stats you sloppily quote.

Thanks you insecure wimp. I pointed out that California restaurant workers had just been given a wage increase by the State and that so far, no restaurants have closed, nor have any workers been fired. That makes a strong counter to your bullshit claim. Those workers aren't in poverty anymore! LOL

My point, that California restaurant workers minimum wage raise did not result in restaurants closing or people losing their jobs, yet did result in them having better incomes and more money to spend, counters your bullshit and that of your fellow "thinking people." Wow, you are such a desperate loser!!! LOL
