Raising the minimum wage would reduce the size of government because the need for government assistance would go down. Workers would have more disposable income and the economy would thrive as demand for goods increased. These are some of the ideas expressed by Nick Haunauer. He says it is either this or that he and his fellow very well to do friends need to be ready to catch a few pitchforks. Here's what he says to his fellow 1%ers.

But let’s speak frankly to each other. I’m not the smartest guy you’ve ever met, or the hardest-working. I was a mediocre student. I’m not technical at all—I can’t write a word of code. What sets me apart, I think, is a tolerance for risk and an intuition about what will happen in the future. Seeing where things are headed is the essence of entrepreneurship. And what do I see in our future now?
I see pitchforks.
At the same time that people like you and me are thriving beyond the dreams of any plutocrats in history, the rest of the country—the 99.99 percent—is lagging far behind. The divide between the haves and have-nots is getting worse really, really fast. In 1980, the top 1 percent controlled about 8 percent of U.S. national income. The bottom 50 percent shared about 18 percent. Today the top 1 percent share about 20 percent; the bottom 50 percent, just 12 percent.
But the problem isn’t that we have inequality. Some inequality is intrinsic to any high-functioning capitalist economy. The problem is that inequality is at historically high levels and getting worse every day. Our country is rapidly becoming less a capitalist society and more a feudal society. Unless our policies change dramatically, the middle class will disappear, and we will be back to late 18th-century France. Before the revolution.
And so I have a message for my fellow filthy rich, for all of us who live in our gated bubble worlds: Wake up, people. It won’t last.

more a feudal society.
Exactly! This was the political paradigm of PK, who basically was anti government and let the strong inherited wealth act as the new American Nobility......as he used to say.....bad ideas fail.

Could ANY Progressive here show us when this has happened in our history?

In good times with fair wages when people can support themselves with a full time job there is less need for the government (us taxpayers) to step in and support workers who should be making a decent salary. When wages increase poverty goes down, fewer people on food stamps, etc.

Listen to what the article is saying. It is the demand for goods by a middle class with enough money to spend that grows the economy.

You are arguing for low wages and more welfare so the 1% can make more profits. As the guy said, just wait for the pitchforks. This cannot continue indefinitely and we will all lose.

Cute evasion. Now please show us where an increase in the minimum wage has accomplished anything much less reduce the size of government.

What percentage of households rely on one worker earning minimum wage?

What is the typical household income where one worker earns minimum wage.

If you can't easily answer those questions, from a reliable source, you really don't know anything about minimum wage other than it makes you FEEL GOOD.

And what makes Semi-Sane "I know NOSSING!" Markle feel good, is watching the 99% become virtual slaves of his corporate idols. But don't call Semi-sane a racist, oh no ... he wants all the middle and poverty class to be virtual slaves of his fascist Icons.

No economist has argued that increasing the minimum wage reduces the size of government. You make something up (surprise), and then you ask us to prove what you have made up. The economist have said as the minimum wage is increased, those citizens who qualify for government programs become less. The argument is not shrinking government, but shrinking government expenditures, and increasing revenues as demand for goods and services increases with more demand from minimum wage workers which grows GDP and tax revenues. This is simple economics which Mr. Markle lacks education, and after seeing in another thread that he is unaware of the risks of cashier checks in real estate transactions, my guess is that he has a great many deficiencies in his own profession, or he is completely retired and is no longer doing closings.....so a check from the Koch brothers supplements his income.

Same silly questions which I have repeatedly answered......not to your satisfaction, but here is the simple economic scientific tenet.......minimum wage increases feed demand......demand grows and economy which is 70% dependent on consumer spending......raise it too fast and you deal with inflation, do not raise it in real dollars for almost three decades, and you see the taxpayers picking up the tab for the social needs of folks who cannot earn a living wage. The minimum wage being raised is good for America.

Regardless of whether one is "for" or "against" the minimum wage .... what authority has the Federal government to dictate a minimum wage private sector employers must pay their employees in the first place?

The minimum wage legislation falls within the constitutional powers of Congress and has been upheld by the courts for over seventy five years. We did not fight a revolution to escape economic exploitation, only to have Congress be bought and paid for over the last thirty years not allowing the minimum wage to keep up with the 1968 real dollars. Good things are coming as the Science of economics will win out over the continued economic rape of our middle class.

Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, unfettered capitalism is not a very kind system. As you can see in this brief history, workers were working in sweat shop conditions and children were often hired to work around dangerous machinery, etc.

The minimum wage is a cornerstone of the United States' labor system, and has been a cutting-edge labor law topic among employers and workers alike for decades. However, the United States hasn't always had a minimum wage. Before the minimum wage was introduced during the Great Depression of the 1930s, there was no national minimum wage, or indeed any legislation to protect workers from exploitation. Because of this lack of regulation tens of thousands of workers were routinely exploited in sweatshops and factories, forced to work in horrible conditions and for pennies a week.

Early attempts by labor unions to create a mandatory minimum wage were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court on the grounds that they "restricted the worker's right to set the price for his own labor". This allowed employers to continue exploiting their workers through the Great Depression of the 1930s, when incredible demand for jobs caused wages to drop even further to an all-time low. With poverty becoming a huge national issue, President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised to constitutionally protect American workers as a key part of his 1936 re-election campaign.
After winning the historical 1936 election by a landslide, President Roosevelt signed the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) into law in early 1938. The FLSA introduced sweeping regulations to protect American workers from being exploited, and created a mandatory federal minimum wage of 25 cents an hour in order to maintain a "minimum standard of living necessary for health, efficiency and general well-being, without substantially curtailing employment". This new law was welcomed as a godsend by the thousands of workers who were previously forced to work for a fraction of that amount, but was violently opposed by many employers and fiscal conservatives who argued that a minimum wage could hurt employers. In addition to establishing a mandatory nation-wide minimum wage the Fair Labor Standards Act introduced many other worker's protection laws still in effect today, including banning child labor and establishing workplace safety statutes.

Do away with the minimum wage.

Why would it be beneficial for working America to abolish the minimum wage?  We're all ears.

As you well know, answering these questions will answer your question.

Proving once again, my Socialist/Communist good friend Wordslinger demands to remain ignorant.

Step up Wordslinger, post the simple answers to these simple questions.

What's become eminently clear is that you are either incapable or not willing to defend your claim that removing the minimum wage would be beneficial to the American economy.

That's okay, but how long has it been that you have been unable to score a conservative point in this forum?

You're truly an old curmudgeon ...LOL

Come on good buddy, provide us the answers to these simple questions.

You inferred that you know the answers.  Why so afraid?

Calling names?  Childish at best.  Like 2seaoat though you are a great foil.

Once again I invite you to tell us why getting rid of the minimum wage would benefit America?  If you don't answer, you make it obvious you really  have no good reason to eliminate the minimum wage .... and that wouldn't surprise most of us.  LOL

I posed these questions to you and you inferred you knew the answers.  But you, TYPICALLY avoided the answer and asked a question instead.

Post the REAL answers to my questions and I'll answer yours.  I won't spend a lot of time because none of what ANYONE could say would enter your Socialist/Communist mind.  You agree with this administration that all their supporters are STUPID and they all need GOVERNMENT to make their decisions.

And up is down, and cold is hot, and wet is dry. Glad to see you really don't have any good reason to remove the minimum wage.

Reality.

Come on Wordslinger...step up.  I asked these questions first and, if you want an answer, I believe you owe us all an honest, candid answer.

Why are you afraid to answer these questions?  Afraid of posting the truth?

Now Wordslinger will either answer the simple questions OR, much more likely, make a feeble effort to change the subject OR get in the last word.
