According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

they should have been on high alert to begin with. it was 911 memorial day.

I like the idea of pulling all of our aide out of those countries. our funds should only go to countries that would defend us and stand with us. Why should we borrow money to send away to people who hate us? makes no sense

I don't know the details about this but I do know that when we were in Japan there was always a "terror alert" status for American bases there. Sometimes the security threat was low but sometimes it was high and when it was high, it was more difficult to get onto US installations. But security at the Embassy in Tokyo was always high after 9/11. Japan is a safe country, but that embassy was well protected.

I would think that Libya would always be in a high security alert status. I don't understand what they were thinking.

You know that the country is pretty much an ally, right? We helped liberate Libya and, for now anyway, are pretty well liked. The population doesn't support the killing of Christopher Stevens, who was also popular in the community.

in libya the populace wasn't doing as badly as in egypt or tunisia or even iran... this smells like a setup.

the protesters appear more and more to have been used there as a diversion for islamic extremists.
