The Pensacola Police Department is conducting a death investigation after a man's body was found in the water on the east side of Community Maritime Park on Friday morning.
Police responded to the area around 11:15 a.m. after someone reported seeing the body.
The PPD is not releasing additional information until the man's family is notified and the investigation determines cause of death, a news release said.
A witness, Robert Steadman, said he was walking near the water on the east side of the park between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. when he saw an unidentified male climb over the railing, fatally shoot himself and fall in the water.
Steadman he had been completely shocked by the incident, and that he was glad there were few other people in the area to witness it.
"I've never seen something like that in a public place like this," he said.
A walkway on the park's east side was closed off briefly as police and officials from the Medical Examiner's Office worked the scene, within about two hours the individual was recovered and the crime scene was cleared.
