Elf on the shelf.....is it conditioning our children to a police state

I heard a discussion on tv that the idea of the Elf always keeping an eye on everybody demanding compliance without dialogue is a bad thing as it conditions children to big brother looking over their shoulder. It is amazing how little kids get into the elf on the shelf, and with my grandkids, they have been really obedient since the elf has been in the house.
