In the fifties and early sixties the sequence on christmas bulbs allowed one burned out bulb to kill the entire string sequence. So you would have to patiently test each bulb and find the culprit. I am watching an old Lucy show and it brought back sweet memories of the annual Christmas bulb repair on a Christmas tree. Now lights are almost disposable and usually reliable. I also remember a friends house burning down because of a Christmas tree fire........burned the whole house down on Christmas Eve........The elf on the shelf must have really have had a problem with those kids.......
