Pelicans are changing their Northern nesting habits

We have been lucky........we have about twenty who are nesting across the river.   Compared to Canada Geese the Pelican is much bigger and the Geese are afraid of the Pelicans.   They started stopping five years ago in their migration north in March and April, but the fishing is so good that they are now staying most of the year here.  We are waiting to see if there will be baby pelicans.  The pup is chasing the baby geese now and has caught two......we yell and she lets them go, but she is now the bad asz pup who has the geese scattering when she appears.   Hopefully, she never gets near a pelican because those big birds will give her a rude awakening.   They usually stay isolated on islands so they can nest without predators getting to their nests.   They also steal fish from the heron.

Perhaps you should pay closer attention to the article your reading.

It says:

Biologists aren't overly worried yet. The main nesting island was first used by pelicans in early 1990s after an island previously preferred by the pelicans was swamped.

Shook says the rising water has submerged some islands and created others over the decades

Looks like they've always had to adapt to change.
