Having just been crowned Don Tristan DeLuna the 65th Collier Merrill holds a sword up high, a symbol of his reign, as he greets his subjects alongside his queen, Clotilde DeMaria, during the DeLuna coronation ball Friday night at the Pensacola Bay Center.

The subliminal message that these events produce is not lost on the plebeian masses in Pensacola. Pomp and ceremony, Black ties dinners, pseudo Royalty all expose the true feelings of those in power. They want us to think it is just a play, a group of people having fun, when it truth they want us to see that they are really in control.. Let them eat cake....

Itchi... they pad a hefty price for the honor of serving in DeLuna 's Court.

Sure, I am aware of that. Be able to act Pompous and have others stroke your ego doesn't come cheap. Many vie for the chance.

I always get a laugh when the PNJ posts photos of all of the different courts and stuff during the De Luna Fest celebrations; especially, the Myoki Indian court. Who in hell are they but a bunch of stuck-up white swingers?

When we were younger, we were members of several Fiesta groups. It was really fun. No one parties like the Mayoki Indians and there parties were the best.....they have the youngest Fiesta members.

I always enjoy the pics of the mardi gra or videos of the irish pub crawl

Pensacola sure knows how to make drinking fun. I almost miss it.

So what? Everyone has a good time and it bring millions of dollars into the local economy.

Nothing, So What. I just thought it newsworthy. I had forgotten about the Millions of dollars that it brings into my neighborhood. Our leaders work hard for us, it is good to see them have a good time. As a loyal subject I am humbled just to be able to observe the galas festivities. All hail the KIng!!!!

It wouldn't be so bad if the real explorer to establish the first colony in the U.S. was being heralded.
But the real explorer to do it has been forgotten.  I guess second banana is better than nothing.  But it's still based on a historical error.

What I'm hoping to see before I die is one of these modern day de Lunas abdicating the throne and giving it to de Ayllon.

But it's still based on a historical error.

nope

Deluna has nothing to do with history.  It is more about recycling Old Curtains and Bed spreads.

I love that dreamy look of the lady watching with her hands in her lap......like a child being transported to a fantasy........I guess we are old and cynical.....and I must disagree with you.......those outfits are too ugly for curtains or bedding.

"San Miguel de Gualdape was the first European settlement in the North American continent founded by Spaniard Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón in 1526".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Miguel_de_Gualdape

Here's where de Ayllon landed...

Sad part is, for some they really believe it. Deayllonmap

SO,  his settlement predated the de Luna settlement by 33 years.  And the settlement was on the east coast of what is now the United States.

So how in hell is the claim on this sign correct?

Sad part is, for some they really believe it. Pensacola-first

one is a settlement, and one was an exploration where they never found the settlement and had a two hundred mile range of where they MIGHT have intended to settle.......the easter bunny and santa claus are real in your view of history, and when they find any record of this mythological settlement, I will certainly listen to your argument........but with a two hundred mile range and second hand accounts........I think folks in Pensacola can remain satisfied that the sign is accurate.

I realize nobody gives a shit about the truth and the facts anymore,  seaoat.

Just because Vladimir Lenin said "a lie told often enough becomes the truth.",
does not mean I have to go along with it.

Bob!!!  You are missing the most important part about Pensacola. We are not known for telling the truth. Look at Studerville. LOL .

First of all,  nobody knows where Columbus landed on his first voyage either,  seaoat.
They know he landed in the Bahamas but they can't pin the exact location down.
Same is true with San Miguel de Gaudalpe.  They know it's on the coast of either South Carolina or Georgia.  But they can't pin the exact location down.

So either Columbus and de Ayllon deserve no credit.  Or they both do deserve the credit.  You can't have it both ways.

"Second hand accounts"?  Nobody is relying on second hand accounts.
Participants in both the de Luna and de Ayllon settlements kept written records (first-hand accounts) and that's how we know about both settlements.

2seaoat

It is not a lie. It will become a lie when you take us to the first settlement and show historical evidence of a PERMANENT settlement, not just a camp in search of the same. You assume with ZERO evidence that this settlement actually happened and was not a camp which was wiped out prior to the settlement. It is like arguing the first settlement was the ships which sank crossing the ocean. I will buy into your fantasy when the archeologist locate this mythical city within the two hundred mile range they cite for the temporary camps which resulted in their wipe out.

Mr Ichi wrote:Bob!!!  You are missing the most important part about Pensacola.  De Ayllón did not have all the cool stuff to wear  like Deluna and besides his name was way to hard to pronounce.

This is de Ayllon, Ichi...

He wore all the same stuff de Luna did. They were both Spaniards.

And his name is easy to pronounce. Ayllon is pronounced EYE LON.
