17 billion subsidies for corn and soy........while farmers are making record profits.......only 230 million subsidy for fruits and vegetables.......and the real kicker is the house budget is asking to take a 20 billion cut in SNAP benefits for folks living in poverty. Our country has been taken over by special interests.

To put things in perspective, the PIRG study said that, if the government had given taxpayers the subsidies instead of the farmers, each one would have been given $7.36 to spend on junk food and just 11 cents to spend on apples a year. This is a key factor that makes junk food more expensive than healthy food -- and, by extension, that makes many Americans obese.

260 billion farm subsidy, and they want to take 20 billion from the poorest Americans. I have no problem tightening up fraud, but I heard that SNAP is about 96% efficient. 71 billion going to food stamps and about 750 million in fraud......focus on the fraud, and reduce the farm subsidies.......It has simply completely outdated as the international markets have made the once struggling farmer rich. I have friends who are farming 400 acres and they have been getting 40k of government subsidy each year, yet they are making over 350k a year in their corn, soy, and pigs.

Do you think it's an accident that corn and soy are two of the major genetically modified crops in the US?

And then there's the completely odious "Monsanto Protection Act" that was slipped into the farm bill.

Other countries are outright banning GM crops. Even the Haitians wouldn't accept GM seeds to rebuild. Farmers in India are committing suicide because they can't afford to buy new Monsanto seed each year. Our farmland is being decimated; bees are dying, and the poison is leaching into our water supplies, studies that aren't financed by Monsanto are showing damage to the human body at the chromosome level from ingestion of GM foods...and we can't even get LABELING. WTH?

Markle is A-Okay with giving $260B to farmers while cutting the SNAP program. He complains on another thread that such welfare programs are being used by Obama to build up the Democratic voter base.

the snap program has grown to 75 billion dollars a year

it has gone from 28 million participants in 2008 to 47 million in 2012.

Id like to see a breakdown of the farm subsidies before I condemn it. we have had a lot of floods, drought etc and on some things the prices would sky rocket without the subsidy. milk was recently in the news about this.

corn is up there because the greenies think its a great idea to use for fuel.

as far as Monsanto, and this is specifically for Fltx...

President Obama signed the bill into law on March 26 in spite of the unprecedented protection given to Monsanto. According to the provision, Monsanto cannot be sued for health damages caused by its use of genetically modified food crops. Furthermore, even if significant health risks are discovered about those genetically modified crops, the government has no authority to ban them. Critics have charged that GMO crops have been inadequately tested and could cause damage to plants, contamination of non-GMO crops, and infertility in livestock, among other concerns.

I think it is 6.5% interest given for kid's student loans, while we allow banks to have .05% money which the lend on credit cards for 14%, or maybe it is four fold subsidies to rich farmers in the 260 billion range.....or maybe it is the 85 billion subsidy to the too big to fail banks who get federal guarantees, or maybe it is simply the forgiveness of 37 million in tarp loans to a local bank which enriched stockholders and officers.........yep snap is a huge problem which involves lazy people.........

Farm subsidies go disproportionately to factory farms and to "gentlemen farmers" who use farms and their subsidies as tax writeoffs...never getting near the land.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) on Monday vowed to repeal a measure that prevents federal courts from halting the sale and planting of genetically engineered crops.

The Farmer Assurance Provision, dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act” by critics, was quietly inserted into a short-term funding bill passed by Congress in March. The biotech rider allows farmers to buy and plant genetically engineered seeds while the regulatory approval of the crop is being challenged in court.

“The Monsanto Protection Act is an outrageous example of a special interest loophole,” Merkley said in a statement. “This provision nullifies the actions of a court that is enforcing the law to protect farmers, the environment and public health. That is unacceptable.”

“To avoid public scrutiny, the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ was quietly and anonymously inserted into the continuing resolution passed this March to avert a government shutdown,” he explained.

Merkley said he would offer an amendment to the Senate farm bill that would repeal the controversial law, which is set to expire in September. However, agricultural groups like the American Soybean Association are expected to lobby for the farm bill to include the Farmer Assurance Provision.

“We applaud Sen. Merkley’s effort to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act. The ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ is an outrageous attempt by biotech giants like Monsanto and DuPont further consolidate their control of our nation’s food supply,” said Executive Director of Food Democracy Now! Dave Murphy. “For too long, Americans have been kept in the dark about the food that we eat and the science behind it because our elected officials are in the pockets of Monsanto. We encourage the Senate to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act and protect the food we eat.”

It was stuck into a "continuation of government" bill at the last minute...typical of the lying hypocrites in the GOP. I'm so sick of these piggyback bills. It had absolutely nothing to do with the bill it was attached to. Check your own facts. Those who voted aye probably had no choice at that late date.
