We take a lot for granted when we step on a plane.

I tell my kids and youngsters the same thing about cars. Don't use the accelerator or brake as an act of faith.

Machines fail... maybe not today... but eventually and certainly.

I took for granted the days spent on the internet when I didn't see people die everyday.

Must have been a loose screw and nut behind the control column.

I logged 3,669 accident-free flight hours as a USMC helicopter pilot and came to the conclusion that 90% of all aircraft mishaps result because of pilot or aircrew error. Another 5% occur because of mechanical failures where the pilot reacts wrong and crashes anyway. The last 5% is due to mechanical failure where safe recovery is not possible.

I had two very close calls along the way; and I have a significant list of former colleagues who were killed in mishaps. All of this occurred during peace time, too.

I guess it is still a safe way to travel.....but when you see one like this going down the wrong way......well it does not seem like a beach and a light kite like craft floating with a Wright Brother.....they seem like a rock.

That's what happens when you run out of airspeed and altitude.

I read that radio chatter prior to the crash indicated that the crew suspected a load shift. Do you think that is what may have caused the sudden left hand turn? The pilot then seems to have over corrected to the right and had 1300 feet and a nose up attitude he just did not have time to recover from the stall. According to the report, he was carrying 5 military vehicles to Dubai.

There are many things about this incident which have made me think. First, with Boston and now this event, it is becoming increasingly clear that the world is being captured in video. Vehicles, homes, and business have eyes which are working 24/7. I spoke to someone who just feels like the world is going to hell in a hand basket........and then we talked about how these awful things are being brought to us in vivid color and detail.

Violence, tragedy, and even our weather events are just overflowing our ability to feel safe. We may on the surface be feeling fine, but we are be overwhelmed with tragic video everyday. Our world has probably never been safer. Air travel is probably never been safer......yet we are seeing things which such vivid video that we are simply overwhelmed.
