Wikipedia bans Daily Mail as 'unreliable' source

Online encyclopaedia editors rule out publisher as a reference citing ‘reputation for poor fact checking and sensationalism’

Jasper Jackson

Wed 8 Feb 2017 15.31 EST

Wikipedia editors have voted to ban the Daily Mail as a source for the website in all but exceptional circumstances after deeming the news group “generally unreliable”.

The move is highly unusual for the online encyclopaedia, which rarely puts in place a blanket ban on publications and which still allows links to sources such as Kremlin backed news organisation Russia Today, and Fox News, both of which have raised concern among editors.

The editors described the arguments for a ban as “centred on the Daily Mail’s reputation for poor fact checking, sensationalism and flat-out fabrication”.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia but does not control its editing processes, said in a statement that volunteer editors on English Wikipedia had discussed the reliability of the Mail since at least early 2015.

It said: “Based on the requests for comments section [on the reliable sources noticeboard], volunteer editors on English Wikipedia have come to a consensus that the Daily Mail is ‘generally unreliable and its use as a reference is to be generally prohibited, especially when other more reliable sources exist’..."

Just wow... I guess she's entitled to her own "facts"?

“There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks,” Ms Abrams said during a panel discussion at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on 20 September, at which she was appearing as part of her campaign to unseat the Peach State’s Republican incumbent Brian Kemp, against whom she ran unsuccessfully in the 2018 midterm elections.

“It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body away from her.”

California poised to give $1,000 to residents for not owning a car

https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/california-sb457-car-free-tax-credit/631194/

California residents who don’t own a registered vehicle could receive a $1,000 tax credit each year for five years starting in 2023, thanks to a bill the state Assembly passed last week. SB 457 now awaits the signature of Gov. Gavin Newsom, who issued an an executive order in 2020 putting California on a path away from gasoline-powered cars.

The momentum for such a tax credit comes on the heels of regulations the California Air Resources Board adopted Aug. 26 to ban gas-powered vehicle sales in the state by the 2035 model year. The regulations also require automakers to achieve a 35% share of zero-emission vehicle sales as early as the 2026 model year.

When does a fetus have a heartbeat?

"Before about week 8 of pregnancy, a doctor may refer to the fetus as an embryo.

The heart of an embryo starts to beat from around 5–6 weeks of pregnancy. Also, it may be possible to see the first visible sign of the embryo, known as the fetal pole, at this stage.

The heart of a fetus is fully developed by the 10th week..."

Such a dumb argument.

An embryo doesn’t have a heartbeat at six weeks because it doesn’t have a heart - no chambers, no valves, just tissue.

At six weeks an embryo is producing electrical impulses, and that is what is picked up by the ultrasound - the very beginnings of a circulatory system.

At best, you can say that at six weeks an embryo is developing the potential for a heart, just as you can say an embryo is potentially developing into a fully formed human being.

That does not mean an embryo is the same as a fully formed human being.

Some go full term and still don’t develop into fully formed human beings.

Exhibit A being the waste of tissue known as PkrBum.

The world would be a better place had that rancid sack of shit been aborted and/or flushed.

California to become sanctuary state for transgender children under new law

https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article266601076.html

Gov. Gavin Newsom late Thursday signed a law that aspires to make California a safe haven for families seeking gender-affirming care for their transgender children.

The law, authored by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, aims to block states with anti-LGBTQ policies from initiating civil or criminal actions against parents helping their transgender kids access health care in California. “In California we believe in equality and acceptance,” Newsom said in a signing message. “We believe that no one should be prosecuted or persecuted for getting the care they need — including gender-affirming care.

Parents know what’s best for their kids, and they should be able to make decisions around the health of their children without fear. We must take a stand for parental choice. That is precisely why I am signing Senate Bill 107.”

Democrats are lagging among Black voters, and that could cost them in November

https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/02/politics/democrats-black-voters-midterm-elections/index.html

Looking at the national polling, it seems possible that Democrats might not be able to count on nearly as much support from Black voters as they have in previous elections.

An average of the final five live interview polls of the 2020 election showed Biden with an 84% to 9% lead over then-President Donald Trump among Black voters – a big 75-point advantage. But this year, an average of the last five live interview polls I could find gives Democrats a 74% to 12% advantage among Black voters – a 62-point edge – on the generic congressional ballot, which usually asks respondents some form of the following question: “If the elections for Congress were held today, would you vote for the Democratic or Republican party?”

This represents a larger swing toward Republicans by Black voters than the swing we have seen among all voters from the 2020 baseline.

Notably, the final five live interview polls I could get from the 2018 midterms showed Democrats with an 85% to 9% lead on the generic ballot with Black voters. Again, what we’re seeing this year is clearly different.

This shift among Black voters isn’t something new. Back in April, I pointed out that Democrats had a 73% to 11% advantage among this demographic on the generic ballot. To me, this consistency indicates that it isn’t statistical noise we’re witnessing. It’s something more concrete than that.

As the sample size of Black respondents in any of these polls tends to hover around 100, it’s difficult to say why Black voters seem less pro-Democratic than they were in 2020 or 2018.

The simplest explanation is the same one I had back in April: Biden’s standing. His average approval rating among Black adults in these polls is 64%. In a compilation of Gallup polls I looked at earlier this year, it was 67%. Biden had an approval rating among Black Americans in the high 80s at the beginning of his term.

Biden’s positive standing with Black voters is still significantly higher than his average approval rating with all adults (in the low 40s). But it’s also lower than the lowest rating of the last Democratic president (Barack Obama) with this group.

The question going forward is how Democrats’ lower standing with Black voters on the generic ballot translates into midterm election results. About 14% of Black voters are, on average, undecided or leaning toward backing a third-party candidate. Many of them could end up either voting Democratic or staying home.

But if Democratic House candidates’ current margin among Black voters on the generic ballot – 62 points – holds, it would be the smallest margin they’ve won this group by since 1990.

Tourist slashed, robbed in Times Square in latest out-of-towner assault

https://nypost.com/2022/10/02/maryland-tourist-slashed-robbed-in-nycs-times-square/

A Maryland tourist was smashed in the head with a bottle, slashed across the face and robbed in Times Square over the weekend — the latest Big Apple attack on an unsuspecting out-of-towner.

The 30-year-old victim was outside the CVS at 1440 Broadway in Manhattan around 4:30 a.m. Saturday when he was approached by two men and a woman, police sources told The Post.

The trio tried to get the victim to buy drugs, then the woman propositioned him for sex, sources said.

When the tourist refused both offers, one of the suspects hit him in the head with a bottle and slashed him across the face with a sharp object before running off with $140, the sources said.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he needed 16 stitches to close the gash across his right cheek, the sources said.

The incident comes after a visitor from Denmark was shot on the Upper West Side last month for refusing to give up his valuables to an armed thief.

The 31-year-old European tourist was at West 103rd Street and West End Avenue in Manhattan around 3:30 a.m. Sept 18 when he “just kept walking” as the robber demanded his cell phone and cash, police said.

Earlier last month, a 30-year-old tourist from Belgium also was slashed in the face in an unprovoked attack at a Chelsea subway station in Manhattan, police said.

And Sept. 1 a 21-year-old Big Apple visitor from St. Louis was attacked and raped at a Times Square subway station around 3 a.m., police said.
