Why we're breaking tradition: Our view

In breaking with tradition this year, we asked ourselves what Al Neuharth, who founded USA TODAY in 1982, would have done. Like Donald Trump, Neuharth had a big ego. (Trump’s best-known book is “The Art of the Deal”; Neuharth’s was “Confessions of an S.O.B.”) But Neuharth, who died in 2013, was a champion of diversity, a defender of First Amendment freedoms and an optimist about America’s future. In a 2012 column, he described Trump as “a clown who loves doing or saying things” to get attention, “no matter how ridiculous.”

Sounds like Al was on to something.

By November Trump might lose most of his public supporters except for his family and Sean Hannity.

This is far from over.

Disregard him at your own peril.

Trump is giving voice to a message that resonates with stupid, aggrieved white people.

And given our history, there is a really shocking number of those people out there.

I have been listening to some incredibly stupid people rationalize their support of Trump....first they apologize, second they rationalize, and third they become fricking delusional. I accept their apology for voting for Trump, I pick apart their flawed logic and try to talk about simple issues like a comparison of the two budget proposals......and then this glaze gets in their eyes and like a zombie who has been brainwashed......they say Trump is a successful businessman who can use his skill sets to save America.........mind numbing stupidity, base entirely in racial, xenophobic, and religious politics.

Wise words and true.   There can be NO complacency if Trump is to be defeated.

By Christine Lavin:

Today I did something I never did before — I ‘defriended’ someone who chastised me in a letter about how offended she was by “Trumped Up Cards,” and how she wanted me to know she was voting for Trump. This was not a fb friend, but someone who subscribes to my website newsletter (christinelavin.com). So I told her a true story I’ve known about Trump since 1994.

An actor friend of mine worked for a caterer in 1993. It was a new caterer, and this caterer was thrilled to land the kind of job that can really boost a career — catering Donald Trump and Marla Maples wedding. At the time she wondered why he didn’t hire other caterers he’d used in the past, but just thanked her lucky stars he hired her.

Everything went beautifully — the food was a hit, the waiters/waitresses all were totally professional. Everything was first rate.

Donald Trump refused to pay the bill. He told the caterer, “I know you are new at this, and when you tell people you catered MY wedding, you will get more business than you could ever dream of. So I am doing you a favor. And when I do favors, I don’t pay. End of discussion.”

She couldn’t believe it — she sent numerous bills — ignored. She threatened to sue — he said “Go ahead. I don’t lose in court.” She explored suing, but came away knowing it would cost her high legal bills, and wouldn’t be worth it. After more than six months of his stonewalling she ended up paying her staff out of her own pocket, though couldn’t pay them fully or she’d be out of business. So Trump stiffed not only her, but her staff, her chefs, her busboys.

This is not a story I recently heard — it’s one I heard 22 years ago. We know many stories like this now. The woman who wrote to me today said, “I know you have a big heart and won’t hold it against me, but I wanted you to know I’m 100% for Trump.”

I wrote back, “I may have a big heart, but it’s not that big. Goodbye.”

Should she write back to chastise me more, her email will go straight to the trash where it belongs.

Anybody reading this offended? Please let me know.

Meanwhile Jeb Bush is saying don't vote at all. Jeb's Dad H.W., Laura Bush and W's daughter are for Hillary. Jeb knows the republiklan regulars will crawl to him in 2020 and beg Jeb to put their broken party back together after Trump smashed it to bits this year. By 2020 the republiklans will understand the fact that they can't take the White House without a Bush on the ticket.

Except the Bush to watch will be Jeb's son George P. Bush. He'll try his hand no later than 2032. Watch him run for Texas Governor by 2024. He is currently the Texas Land Commissioner, while he sharpens his political skills and track record.

Hillary will handily win in both 2016 and 2020. Just watch.....

Great minds think alike. Smile I was thinking along those same lines knowing that 2020 will be too soon for George P. I still expect Jeb to take a run against Hillary in 2020. Who else do they have? At least the Bush brand has proven it can win for republicans.

Jeb is incredibly boring. I have a hard time believing he even wanted the job.

Here's another endorsement for Hillary Clinton...this one's from home:

http://www.caller.com/opinion/editorials/our-support-for-hillary-clinton-is-enthusiastic-3da79118-75be-1951-e053-0100007f9177-395461761.html

Our support for Hillary Clinton is enthusiastic

That we endorse Hillary Clinton for president should come as no surprise. There really is no other choice. And that's unfortunate — not because, as many Americans have allowed themselves to be led to believe, the country desperately needs a viable alternative to her. It's unfortunate because of the shadow it casts upon the former secretary of state/senator/first lady's genuine worthiness to be our first female president.

She is not, as has been sold, a mere lesser of two evils. Her experience and intellect would make her a standout in any group of candidates. Like President Obama said and didn't need to be fact-checked, she's more qualified than him or her husband.

We have reservations about the next presidency that have nothing to do with Clinton's abilities, personality or transgressions. Our concern is about the enormity of the task of leading a nation so polarized that angry factions are likely to dispute the election's outcome no matter who wins.

Blaming all of that on Donald Trump — as reprehensible as has been his campaign against Mexican immigrants, women, people of color, prisoners of war and Muslims, to name just a few, and as deplorable as was his declaration that the election is rigged unless he wins — gives him too much credit. He is only the intersection for fears and hatreds that already existed and that bring out the worst in the people privileged to live in the world's greatest nation. Using hatred and fear isn't what makes Trump smart. It's what makes him an insult to voters' intelligence.

Being the only serious alternative is both Clinton's fortune and misfortune. It increases the likelihood of victory, but also of presiding over a nation with large groups of dissidents. While voting against her can be a statement of differing principle, voting for Trump would not rise to that level. It's not a vote for Republicanism. The Republican Party's principles and standards are beyond Trump's reach.

Voting for Trump is a form of nihilism that the next president, no matter whom, will need to explore, understand and seek to remedy. The new president and we as a nation would benefit from understanding why, for example, distressed taxpayers who live paycheck-to-paycheck and whose American Dream has been dashed would vote for someone who gained his American Dream through inheritance, exploitation, tax evasion, bankruptcy and the misfortunes of people like themselves — and why they would reject someone who gained her American Dream on merit, married once, hasn't divorced, and knows how to change a diaper.

We perceive in Clinton the capability to bridge the divide — to define rather than exploit our problems and pursue intelligent solutions. Her "basket of deplorables" comment made the task more difficult but it was a rare lapse by an otherwise level-headed servant leader with a history of self-correcting resilience. The former senator's Republican colleagues remember her fondly as a middle-ground-seeking master of the art of deal-making. If there is to be a return to bipartisanship, she is the one to lead it.

The woman who memorably declared that women's rights are human rights and that it takes a village to raise a child is the candidate who has the right priorities and the perceptiveness to make this divided but great country greater.
