I agree with Cook on this one.

I get Apple's position on this.

And, I'll also admit to technological ignorance regarding the matter.

But, isn't it reasonable to think that if Apple has the ability to unlock the device, they could do so and provide the Feds with the unlocked phone and/or the info contained on it, without giving the Feds the key?

If so, Apple's slippery slope argument kinda slides away.

Wow, scary. Salinsky and I agree once again.

He said, "For many years, we have used encryption to protect our customers’ personal data because we believe it’s the only way to keep their information safe. We have even put that data out of our own reach, because we believe the contents of your iPhone are none of our business."

He also said this ...

Specifically, the FBI wants us to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. In the wrong hands, this software — which does not exist today — would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone’s physical possession.

So, they don't have a key, but they have the ability to make a key.

I think he's splitting hairs a little.

Frankly, I'm shocked that the NSA doesn't have the capability given all the money and resources they are given.

Sounds to me like he knows the potential but does not want to be party to making such things happen. Why screw up a good product and turn it into a snooping vehicle for the government? I'm sure they will find someone to do it. Governments do that...
...where's Teo? Sad

Apparently... apple acknowledged last year in a nyc case that it has complied to unlock over 70 phones since 2008.

Their "principles" appear tied to an opportunity for worldwide publicity.

Razz Razz Razz Razz Yeah, Apple needs the publicity. Razz Razz Razz Razz

It's hard to buy this kind of worldwide publicity. I don't recall the other seventy times... do you? Why else fight something crucial to investigating a terrorist attack... when the other instances were presumably less significant? Seems odd.

Right Teo?

I figure Cook understands the right to privacy. The government does not. And to do it all in the name of "terrorism" - how far will they go.

Again...you go, Tim. Thanks!

Hell... I'm just pleased the govt is using the courts... in this instance.

The best argument in defense of Apple is: If a code is created to backdoor into a locked cellphone, the same system then exists for bad guys to use -- including your government!!!

Simple.

Whoever, in government personally delivers the device to Apple in California. Government guards the process. Apple opens the phone, downloads all the information it contains. Seals it all up, gives everything to the FBI.

Everyone happy. Problem solved.

And by so doing, Apple has promised to make itself available to law enforcement --- literally all the time. And, once again, if code or a formula has been created to allow the penetration of a locked cellphone, the code would continue to exist. Reality.

My Socialist/Communist good friend who uses Adolph Hitler's private train as his signature, urgently wants to see far more of these attacks across the country.

On December 2, 2015, 14 people were killed and 22 were seriously injured in a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, which consisted of a mass shooting and an attempted bombing.

Wordslinger uses the misspelled word "Amerika" only as a diversion and do idolize Adolph Hitler. He really wants to post "DOWN WITH AMERICA".

And he drowns kittens and barbecues babies. He uses the Amerikan flag as a napkin too. He doesn't wear clean underwear! He married a Baptist girl so he could torture her for years and years and years. He pulls the legs off frogs.
