If you believe Baby Jesus is watching and listening to you all the time, and makes it able for you to pee every morning, don't read the following article.

If you're afraid a piece of sharp writing might destroy your faith in the great Fire Ladder, or the magical powers of your ashtray (in the shape of the State of Texas), I caution you -- don't read the following material!!

Religious ideology is not personal faith. But I think the writer comes to this conclusion near the end of the article. It's a good assessment.

Very Happy

Glad we agree. I was teasing with the lead in, because I really want the piece to be read.

That was nicely stated.

Now what I would like to hear/read is what the  religious "fundamentalists" or "evangelicals" or "Christian conservatives" would have to say about it.
More than anything I'd like to know what Carl Gallups and his congregation/radio audience would have to say about it?  Not to mention the Ted Cruz followers,  the Trump/Falwell Jr. followers,  and that ilk.
And even more than anything,  what would Phil and Willie Robertson have to say about it?  lol

The folks you mention all have money to make by way of entertainment or aspirations of higher office with money to make. They know what sells. So I doubt they will have much to say against "religion."

I only have one thing to say about that.  Amen.  lol

When I was young,  if I knew then what I know now,  that using religion to make money is probably the easiest human endeavor that any human can do,  I'd probably have gone over to the dark side and become one of them.  It's just too tempting.  lol

It's never too late, Bob. What a story you'd have of your turning to religion. I can see the hankies sobbing up tears and the checks being written! And your wit! Never too late!

There's only one thing that would prevent me from ever having success at exploiting religion for money,  SheWrites.  And unfortunately it would be an absolute deal killer.  And it would be that I absolutely suck at public speaking.
I tried it once.  And that was just in front of about 15 people.  Never again.  lol

Bob, it's all about shouting and repeating the same thing over and over. You can do this!

I probably could learn how to shout and scream if that's what it takes,  SheWrites.
But it still wouldn't work.  Because once they learned I'm an "abomination" in the eyes of their gods,  the show would be over.
The evidence for that is Ted Haggard.  One day he had them all in the psalms of his hands.
The next day?  Well we saw what happened with him.  lol

You are so kind for saying that.  But the truth is more like what Gregg Allman came up with for the title of one of his songs.  lol

"I'm no angel,  I'm no stranger to the dark".

Pure lyrical poetry.

You have a great day too,  SheWrites.

I'm off to a doctor appointment.  When I return later today,  I want to address something in wordslinger's link.  Specifically this...

"I want to emphasize that I am not referring to the personal religious convictions of millions by which life is made to appear understandable and meaningful. Whether such convictions are accurate or not, they play an important role at the individual level"

That was a really good article, Wordslinger.

I liked this excerpt:

"...A better lesson learned seems to be: if you want to be religious, keep it personal and tolerant, avoid tendencies toward institutionalization beyond the level of local charity and organized good works, and stay clear of political alliances. It is said that Jesus told his disciples that “where two or three of you are gathered together there I too will be.” Those are just about the right numbers when it comes to keeping religion safe for the believers and non-believers alike..."

When I was in the fourth grade, the D___ family rented the house next door to my family. The father was a geologist working for the state government, and they moved him around a lot. They befriended my parents and we kids befriended their kids, and our families became close and stayed close for years afterward. My parents are now both deceased, but I still keep in touch by annual letter with Mr. and Mrs. D____, who are now in their late 80s.

The D____s were a devout Christian family who never wore their faith on their sleeves, never proselytized, never assumed an air about themselves. They befriended my heathen, cigarette-smoking parents without question. In 1962, when my father came down with a terrible, almost always fatal illness ( http://cid.oxfordjournals.org/content/42/1/103.full ), Mr. D____ carried him into the hospital in his arms. My father eventually overcame his illness after an 11 year treatment regimen, when most patients die. Besides the great work of an obscure small-town doctor who had a fistful of similarly-afflicted patients, there is no doubt in my mind that the prayers of the D___s helped my Dad greatly.

The moral of this little story is that the D____s, in my mind, represent how the Christians of today need to behave.

My Socialist/Communist good friend Wordslinger, never fails to support me!

Why is a self proclaimed Heathen SO interested and so obsessed about people of faith?

Why is a fascist like you concerned about my great dislike for organized religion? Feeling threatened? If things keep going the way they are going, you and your hero Ted Cruz will both be a minority!

I wrote that on the way out to a doctor appointment this morning.
This is the first chance I've had to try to gather my thoughts and try to write this for wordslinger.

One of my best friends,  who is about my age,  had been healthy all his life.
At Christmas,  he had some swelling in his cheek so went to the doctor.
Turned out it was a swollen lymph gland and he was diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer.

As fate would have it,  it turned out to be one of the most aggressive cancers.  It's called Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.  To make a month long story short,  after only a month,  he's literally fighting for his life.  It's taken over his body.

He's what I call a "jewish type catholic".  You won't know that term because I just invented it.
What it means is this.  From birth,  his Italian upbringing and heritage subjected him to Catholicism like Jews are subjected to Judaism.  For some Jews and some Catholics it becomes far more than just religion.  It becomes a way of life in just about every sense.

Some rebel against that.  But many others like my friend never stray from it.
At least not the religion part.  They might become very secular in many ways,  but the Catholic religion becomes a part of them.  And for my friend,  it has become a way to cope with life.  It was that for all the time I've known him,  long before he got the cancer diagnosis.
It has been the one thing that has helped him cope with very many problems including some really heartbreaking family problems.

And then comes Christmas and the cancer hits him like a tsunami.

When he first was hospitalized,  he learned of Frances Xavier Seelos.
No I had never heard the name either.  But he is a Catholic Saint who
lived in New Orleans at the time of the Civil War.  It is believed that he miraculously was involved in the healing of many who had contracted yellow fever before he himself succumbed to it.  That's what made him a Catholic Saint.  And down through the years since he died,  many claim that using his prayers has continuously healed the sick.

So my friend has now pinned his hopes on a miraculous cure with the help of Saint Seelos.
In the hospital,  he asked me to print out a photo of the Seelos shrine in New Orleans which I took to him.  And he has been using that with his prayers from the beginning.  It's the only hope he has left.

So what is the point of all this for your benefit, wordslinger?
It's that what I quoted from your link and put in bold text is not to be taken lightly.  And while I despise some aspects of both religion and organized religion even far more than you do (and trust me I really do);  it's a doubled edged sword.  Because it's also what my friend needs right now.

By the way it's been a trying day.  That doctor appointment I went to this morning revealed the results of a CT scan.  I learned the lymphoma I was diagnosed with two years ago has now metastisized into lung cancer.

No I didn't start praying.  I booked a trip on this for next January. I'm going out in style.  lol

Bob, I have no words to express my feelings now. After what I just went through with Teo, this is like a ton of bricks just hit me. Although yours isn't a death sentence, I know it will be difficult. Although Teo is not with us, if you are up for lunch at David's or maybe Cactus Flower, let me know and we can celebrate life Smile
