According to this video report, We are surrounded by oceans on 3 sides, yet 90% of our seafood is imported, with a great deal of it coming through or from China, where there is very little regulation.
Our seafood often goes months between being caught and consumed, is frozen and defrosted several times along the way, and it is likely that seafood caught off of Florida is shipped to China for processing and packaging, then refrozen and shipped back to the U.S. for consumption. Yes, the Chinese have even taken processing seafood away from us--only what they do with the fish while they have it in their possession is not regulated by the FDA, and the FDA cannot keep up with inspecting what is re-imported.
