I read today that when Columbus set foot in the West Indies in 1492 there were some three million Arawak Indians living on various islands in the Caribbean sea.  By 1515, just 23 years later, there were only 50,000 Arawaks left.  By 1560, they were down to 500.  By 1650 the Arawaks were extinct.

While large numbers of them succumbed to European diseases, the majority were worked to death as slaves.

What Europe brought the New World was conquest, slavery and death.

Why do we celebrate Columbus day?
