That's a profound observation. It is all that and it's the one thing that anyone, no matter how reknowned or how anonymous, can make use of to bring someone down.
I used to revere the concept. But as I grow older I get softer and mellower and start to feel bad for the targets of it.

As I get older, I find that I'm much less likely to tolerate ignorant behavior...it's not that I don't get how people are being brainwashed...it's that they won't challenge anything and won't stand up for themselves.

Rand Paul is irrelevant in the Presidential election.  He however could be a key senator getting real reform done in the senate with bipartisan efforts to revamp the American criminal justice system.  He needs to focus and find his strengths.  He like Cruz look like frail pip squeaks who have this need for us to pay attention to them by more outrageous showmanship and words......neither could lead because neither can follow....and therein lies the reason for their irrelevancy.
